The Galápagos Archipelago , situated roughly one thousand kilometres west of continental Ecuador , owes its existence to a stationary mantle plume beneath the eastward - drifting Nazca tectonic plate . This geodynamic mechanism creates a pronounced age gradient across the volcanic province , dividing the islands into active western shields and deeply weathered eastern platforms . Fernandina and Isabela occupy the younger western sector , whereas San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz anchor the older eastern zone . While the former represent volcanically active juvenile landforms , the latter constitute degraded volcanic remnants whose primary magmatic activity ceased millions of years ago . This chronological disparity governs the physical geomorphology of the respective island groups . On the western landmasses , recurrent basaltic eruptions deposit fresh pahoehoe and aa lava flows across steep caldera slopes . Such raw volcanic surfaces possess almost no arable topsoil , creating hyper - arid , nutrient - poor terrestrial conditions . Conversely , centuries of chemical weathering on the eastern islands have broken down ancient basalt into fertile andosols . The former landscapes remain largely barren mineral expanses , whereas the latter sustain multilayered Scalesia cloud forests along their misty highlands . Ecological succession and speciation patterns reflect these disparate physical foundations . Marine iguanas and flightless cormorants dominate the precipitous western shorelines , where cold upwelling from the Cromwell Current delivers abundant marine nutrients to compensate for terrestrial sterility . In contrast , terrestrial adaptive radiation thrives across the eastern highlands , where deep soils provide specialized ecological niches for diverse Darwin's finch morphotypes . The former fauna depend almost exclusively upon benthic marine algae , while the latter rely upon terrestrial fruits , seeds , and canopy insects . Conservation biologists increasingly recognize that protecting such distinct ecosystems requires differentiated management strategies . Invasive herbivores and introduced mammalian predators present an immediate threat to the vegetated eastern platforms ; however , catastrophic volcanic eruptions pose the primary peril to western endemics . Consequently , eradication campaigns focus intensively on the former problem , whereas genetic banking and translocations provide insurance against the latter hazard . Understanding this geochronological progression illuminates how plate tectonics drives planetary biodiversity across isolated island arcs . Have you ever considered how the geological age of a landform dictates the evolutionary pathways of its resident species ? How might conservationists balance immediate interventions against invasive species with long - term monitoring of geothermal activity ? Which specific mitigation strategies would you deploy to protect specialized island endemics from sudden ecological shocks ?
