In the spring of 1900 , sponge divers sheltering from a storm off the Greek island of Antikythera discovered a first - century BCE shipwreck laden with classical marble and bronze sculptures . Among these celebrated aesthetic masterpieces lay an unpromising , heavily corroded lump of calcified bronze . When archaeologist Valerios Stais examined the fragment two years later , he noticed gear wheels with split - millimetre teeth embedded inside the stone crust . For decades , traditional classicists dismissed this mechanical interpretation , assuming that complex clockwork mechanisms remained undiscovered until the fourteenth - century European Renaissance . That skepticism delayed serious inquiry until physicist Derek J . de Solla Price initiated the first systematic radiographic analysis in the 1950s . Price published a pioneering study in 1974 proposing that the artifact functioned as an analogue astronomical calculator . His preliminary schematics identified roughly thirty interlocking gears , but two - dimensional radiographs left many internal connections ambiguous . To resolve these uncertainties , the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project deployed high - resolution three - dimensional X - ray computed tomography in 2005 . Where earlier two - dimensional scans had obscured overlapping components , modern tomographic ones revealed intricate bronze trains operating inside a wooden housing no larger than a mantel clock . The researchers deciphered over three thousand characters of inscribed explanatory text , confirming that the front dial displayed the zodiac while two rear spiral dials tracked lunar and solar cycles . The internal mechanics revealed an astonishing level of mathematical sophistication . Scribes and engineers had incorporated an epicyclic pin - and - slot gear train to replicate the Moon's irregular orbital speed , modeling the elliptical anomaly described by the astronomer Hipparchus . Furthermore , the device calculated the 223 - month Saros cycle to predict solar and lunar eclipses , while a four - year subsidiary dial tracked the Panhellenic athletic cycle , including the Olympic Games . Such technical elegance demonstrated that Hellenistic engineers did not merely theorize mathematical cosmology ; they embodied that knowledge in kinetic bronze apparatuses . The survival of a single such calculating machine raises profound questions about technological transmission across antiquity . If one workshop in Rhodes or Corinth achieved this level of miniaturization , how many equivalent devices vanished into melting furnaces during late antiquity ? How do you reconcile this physical evidence of advanced mechanics with traditional historical narratives that treat technological progress as strictly linear ? In what ways does the sudden rediscovery of ancient technical sophistication change how you assess the intellectual limits of historical civilizations ?
