Rising above the southeastern plateau of southern Africa , Great Zimbabwe stands as the most formidable medieval stone city south of the Sahara . Flourishing between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries as the seat of a prosperous Shona kingdom , the settlement commanded an empire sustained by pastoral wealth and intercontinental trade . At its architectural core , masons extracted tabular granite through thermal exfoliation , cleaving regular blocks from natural domes to assemble monumental walls entirely without mortar . The resulting structures , particularly the Hill Complex and the Great Enclosure , demonstrate an engineering mastery that integrated living bedrock into towering curvilinear fortifications . The Great Enclosure remains the site's most celebrated sector . Its outer perimeter wall extends over two hundred and fifty metres , reaching heights of eleven metres and widths of six metres at its massive base . Within this perimeter stands the mysterious Conical Tower , a solid stone monument soaring ten metres high without interior chambers or functional staircases . While some early antiquarians interpreted this edifice as a defensive watchtower , modern archaeologists view the structure as a symbolic granary , embodying royal authority and the state's capacity to distribute grain during prolonged droughts . Great Zimbabwe's economic vitality derived from its commanding position within transoceanic exchange networks . Situated between inland alluvial goldfields and Swahili coastal trading ports such as Sofala and Kilwa , the kingdom traded gold , ivory , and cattle for luxury imports from across the Indian Ocean basin . Excavations within the Valley Ruins have yielded fourteenth - century Chinese blue - and - white porcelain , Persian glazed ceramics , and thousands of glass beads originating in South Asia . These exotic goods circulated among elite lineages , reinforcing social stratification and linking interior Africa directly into medieval global commerce . In the late nineteenth century , colonial authorities attempted to obscure this indigenous heritage . British antiquarians , guided by racial prejudice , attributed the stone city to Phoenicians or biblical visitors ; the former explanation catered to settler ideology , whereas the latter sought to sever local populations from their architectural achievements . Rigorous stratigraphic excavations conducted by David Randall - MacIver in 1905 and Gertrude Caton - Thompson in 1929 definitively dismantled both claims , proving that ancestral Shona builders designed and raised every enclosure . Today , the soapstone raptors unearthed from the royal acropolis form the national symbol of Zimbabwe , affirming the site's enduring cultural resonance . How do you evaluate the role of architectural preservation when ancient monuments become contested political symbols ? If you had the opportunity to investigate an undocumented archaeological sector at Great Zimbabwe , which questions regarding its domestic life or regional trade routes would you prioritise ?
