In May 1851 , at the Women's Rights Convention in Akron , Ohio , Sojourner Truth delivered an extemporaneous speech that demonstrated the formidable argumentative force of erotesis , or the rhetorical question . Rather than seeking informational replies , Truth deployed interrogative syntax to dismantle paternalistic assertions regarding gender fragility and racial hierarchy . Clergymen in attendance had argued that female disenfranchisement was natural , citing women's supposed physical helplessness and theological inferiority . Truth confronted these rationalisations not through abstract syllogisms , but by turning lived hardship into an inescapable interrogative refrain that forced her audience to confront their own contradictions . The central thrust of her oratory rested on the visceral interrogation of physical labour and bodily endurance . She pointed to her muscular arms , declaring that she had ploughed , planted , and gathered into barns without any man assisting her . Then came the piercing reframing : could any doctrine justify excluding from human dignity a person who had borne the lash and endured excruciating toil ? By framing her life not as a plea but as an undeniable counterexample , she exposed the hypocrisy of chivalric rhetoric that selectively protected affluent white women while subjecting enslaved Black women to relentless exploitation . Each question stripped away the theological pretexts of her opponents , transforming a defensive debate into an aggressive indictment of systemic oppression . Furthermore , Truth turned her interrogative critique toward religious orthodoxy . When detractors asserted that women were innately inferior because Christ was male , she countered with devastating brevity : where did your Christ come from ? The question hung in the charged assembly before she delivered the unassailable theological answer : from God and a woman , with man having nothing to do with Him . By posing questions whose only conceivable answers shattered patriarchal dogmatism , Truth demonstrated how erotesis can invert an established burden of proof . Rhetorical questions function most potently when they deny listeners neutrality , compelling the mind to articulate an answer that confirms the speaker's premise . Rather than listening passively to declarative claims , the audience becomes an active co - creator of the conclusion , trapped within the undeniable logic of their own unspoken replies . When you present complex arguments in high - stakes negotiations , do you rely exclusively on declarative assertions , or do you use interrogative reframing to dismantle opposing assumptions ? How can you formulate questions that compel your listeners to recognise their own unexamined biases ?
