At the Rolls Building in London , the practice of English jurisprudence demands instantaneous command of situational register . Inside Courtroom Three , where an Employment Tribunal is adjudicating a contentious whistleblowing claim , barristers communicate through an exquisitely formal forensic register . Every submission is calibrated to judicial protocol , saturated with honorific deference , archaisms , and disciplined syntactic subordination . Counsel does not interrupt ; rather , they rise to state : " If the Tribunal pleases , I am grateful for that indication , but my learned friend's construction fails to reckon with the statutory protections of the Employment Rights Act . " The register is cold , dispassionate , and strictly evidentiary , designed to insulate legal argument from raw interpersonal animosity . When the presiding judge rises for the mid - morning adjournment , this elaborate forensic theatre dissolves within seconds . Stepping through the heavy oak doors into the barristers ' robing room , opposing advocates execute an immediate and dramatic register shift . Wigs and collars remain on , yet their verbal interaction sheds every vestige of courtroom solemnity . Boiling the electric kettle and unpacking digestive biscuits , the very advocates who just spent two hours attempting to demolish each other's credibility converse with breezy , colloquial intimacy : " Proper nightmare on those disclosure bundles , wasn't it ? " or " Thought the witness was going to implode on that cross - check . " This situational code - switching is neither hypocritical nor frivolous ; it is structurally indispensable to the functioning of an adversarial legal system . The elevated formality of the courtroom depersonalises conflict , ensuring that advocates represent their clients ' interests with uncompromising vigour without descending into private vendettas . Conversely , the relaxed , informal register of the tea break restores professional equilibrium . It allows opposing counsel to negotiate procedural timelines , resolve minor evidential disputes , and maintain the collegial trust that prevents prolonged judicial deadlock . Linguistic competence at this elite level consists not merely in possessing extensive vocabulary , but in knowing precisely where the border between registers lies . An advocate who brings the informal banter of the robing room before a High Court judge faces immediate judicial reprimand , while one who preserves icy courtroom pomposity while pouring tea is swiftly ostracised by colleagues . When you transition between high - stakes public presentations and backstage professional discussions , how fluently do you execute your situational register shifts ? Does your informal workplace communication actively rebuild the interpersonal trust and collegial rapport that competitive scrutiny and adversarial debate temporarily strain ?
