Lena wanted a warning before the caller asked to cancel : the model should say he was angry . That was the whole point of this trial of emotional AI . A tired agent could slow down . If the label was wrong , he would leave still sounding polite , and the desk would never see what it had missed . She played the recording once . Pitch stayed level , intensity did not rise , and the pauses were neat . She also had the spectral shape of the voice in front of her . On that set of clues the model marked the call calm . Then she opened the chat that had arrived with the audio . " Wonderful . Another hour of my evening , and all of it free . " Word by word , the line is thanks . Spoken by a person , it is the opposite . Sarcasm sits in that gap , and irony sits there too . A row of cheerful words will not close it . A face might have helped , and none was there . People who study expression often name action units , the movements of particular muscles . A posed photograph holds those movements still . A person arguing at a kitchen table rarely holds them the same way . This caller had switched the camera off . A sensor on the wrist can show heart rate variability , or a shift in skin conductance , signals less open to deliberate control than a smoothed voice . Asking a customer to wear one is a privacy choice , not a quiet upgrade , and Lena would not make it in the middle of a ticket . Brain activity sat further still from an ordinary phone call . She kept the two channels she already had and would not let either win alone . Bringing more than one signal together has a modest aim : one weak channel may correct another . Speech said calm . The text , scored only as sentiment , said pleased . Side by side they disagreed , and the disagreement was the part worth keeping . She wrote a rule for the next pass . Do not treat a flat pitch as proof of ease . Do not treat a smiling sentence as proof of thanks . A system built for one clean task will stumble when the case is no longer clean , and a live conversation often is not . She stopped short of writing that the model understood him . A cognitive system worthy of the name would need a reason for the anger , a memory of what had already gone wrong , and a reply that did not make it worse . She had a wrong label . She sent the call to a person , closed the notebook , and left the warning dark .
