Ciò che regge tutto il corso
1) Periodo ipotetico: irrealtà nel presente o nel futuro - if + past simple, would + infinito; irrealtà nel passato - if + past perfect, would have + participio; nel periodo misto scegli il tempo di ogni parte in base all’indicatore temporale (now, yesterday, in 2019). Dopo if non va mai would. 2) Passivo: be + participio, e il tempo lo indica solo be: has been done, had been done, will be done, was being done, must be done. 3) Domande indirette: asked + if / whether oppure la parola interrogativa, ordine da frase affermativa, niente do / does / did, e il tempo slitta all’indietro. 4) Ordini e richieste: told / asked + persona + (not) to + infinito. In un testo vero queste idee lavorano insieme.
Periodo ipotetico di secondo e terzo tipo
| Tipo | Forma | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| secondo: irreale nel presente | if + past simple, would + verbo | If I were you, I would call the manager. |

| misto con il passivo | if + had been + participio, would + verbo | If the road had been built, the village would be busier now. |
Il passivo in tutti i tempi
| Tempo | Forma | Esempio |

Per questo qualcuno traduce male in If I would have known: la forma giusta è If I had known, I would have told you.
L’inglese vuole sempre un soggetto e be + participio: The bridge has been repaired. Non perdere be: dopo must, can, need to e have to va be + participio (The room had to be cleaned, non had to clean).
In She asked me what I would do if I lost my job si vedono insieme l’ordine della frase affermativa e lo slittamento del tempo.
Esempi in cui le regole si combinano
- If the bridge had been repaired, the accident wouldn't have happened.
- If the road had been built, the village would be busier now.
- She asked me what I would do if I lost my job.
- He told us the room had to be cleaned before noon.
- The inspector asked whether the walls had been checked.
- If I were you, I would tell them to fix the roof before the rain.
- My boss asked why the report hadn't been finished. If I had started earlier, it would have been ready.
- The guests were told to wait while the lift was being repaired.
Errori tipici
If the bridge would have been repaired, the accident wouldn't have happened. If the bridge had been repaired, the accident wouldn't have happened. Dopo if non va would. She asked me what would I do if I lost my job.She asked me what I would do if I lost my job. Nella domanda indiretta l’ordine è quello affermativo. He asked me that if I had a job.He asked me if I had a job. Niente that davanti a if.She said me to wait here. She told me to wait here. The manager told me don't be late. The manager told me not to be late. Il divieto è not to + infinito. He told us the room had to clean. He told us the room had to be cleaned. La stanza non agisce: be + participio. The roof will be repair next week. The roof will be repaired next week. Nel passivo, dopo be va il participio. The bridge was repairing when the storm came. The bridge was being repaired when the storm came. Il ponte non agisce: was being + participio. She asked me what I will do if I lost my job.She asked me what I would do if I lost my job. Dopo asked al passato va would, non will.
Domande e risposte
Come distinguo secondo tipo, terzo tipo e periodo misto?
Guarda il tempo di cui parli. Irreale nel presente o nel futuro: secondo tipo (if I knew, I would tell). Irreale nel passato: terzo tipo (if I had known, I would have told).
Metti be al tempo che ti serve e aggiungi il participio: has been done, had been done, will be done, was being done, must be done.
She asked me where I live.
Uso if o whether?
Nella domanda indiretta sì / no sono intercambiabili: He asked if I was ready e He asked whether I was ready hanno lo stesso significato. Whether si usa anche davanti a or not.
Che cosa comprende questo ripasso?
Periodo ipotetico di secondo e terzo tipo e misto, passivo in tutti i tempi, domande e ordini nel discorso indiretto (asked if, told me to).
In questi tipi di periodo ipotetico, no. Would sta nella principale: If I had more time, I would travel more.
