Il passivo in tutti i tempi: has been done, will be done

Nel passivo inglese solo il verbo be indica il tempo e il verbo principale è sempre al participio passato: The bridge has been repaired, The results will be announced on Monday, The car was being repaired when I called.

La regola principale

Passivo in qualsiasi tempo: soggetto + be + participio passato. Cambia solo be: has / have been, had been, is / are being, will be, was / were being, can / must / should be.

Il present simple e il past simple passivi (is made, was built) li hai già visti nell’argomento «Passive Voice» del livello B1.

I tempi si corrispondono quasi uno a uno: «è stato riparato» = has been repaired, «era stato venduto» = had been sold, «sarà annunciato» = will be announced, «veniva riparata» = was being repaired.

Esempi

  • The bridge has just been repaired. Il ponte è stato appena riparato.
  • The tickets had all been sold before we arrived. I biglietti erano stati venduti tutti prima del nostro arrivo.
  • The results will be announced on Monday. I risultati saranno annunciati lunedì.
  • The new library is going to be opened next spring. La nuova biblioteca verrà inaugurata la prossima primavera.
  • The old theatre is being repaired at the moment.
  • The car was being repaired when I called. Stavano riparando l’auto quando ho telefonato.
  • The form must be signed in blue ink.
  • The room has to be cleaned before the guests come.
  • The report needs to be checked again. Il rapporto va ricontrollato.
  • Has the parcel been sent yet? Il pacco è già stato spedito?
  • The house hasn't been painted since 2019. La casa non è stata tinteggiata dal 2019.
  • This song has been recorded by hundreds of singers.

Present perfect: has / have been + participio (The bridge has been repaired). Past perfect: had been + participio (The tickets had been sold before we arrived). Futuro: will be + participio (The results will be announced on Monday); be going to be + participio si sente di più quando si parla di piani e intenzioni (The library is going to be opened in May). Present continuous: am / is / are being + participio (The bridge is being repaired): l’azione è in corso adesso o in questo periodo. Past continuous: was / were being + participio (The car was being repaired when I called). La negazione e la domanda si formano come nella frase attiva, cioè cambia solo il primo ausiliare: hasn't been, Has ... been, won't be, Will ... be, wasn't being, Was ... being.

Dalla frase attiva al passivo e viceversa

FormaFrase attivaFrase passiva
Present perfectThey have repaired the bridge. The bridge has been repaired.
Past perfectThey had sold all the tickets. All the tickets had been sold.
FuturoThey will announce the results on Monday. The results will be announced on Monday.
Present continuousThey are repairing the bridge now.The bridge is being repaired now.
Past continuousThey were repairing the car when I called. The car was being repaired when I called.
Verbo modaleYou must sign the form. The form must be signed.

Se serve nominare l’agente, va in fondo con by: The bridge has been repaired by a local company.

Passivo con i verbi modali e infinito passivo

Dopo un verbo modale metti be e il participio: can be done, must be signed, should be checked, might be delayed, may be changed. Il significato del modale non cambia: must indica obbligo, should consiglio, can e could possibilità, might e may probabilità. Anche have to be e has to be vogliono be e il participio: The room has to be cleaned. Lo stesso vale dopo need to, want ... to e be going to: It needs to be checked, I want this to be done today. Dopo il modale e dopo to, be resta alla forma base: non *must signed, non *needs to checked.

Quando si mantiene by

L’agente si nomina con by solo se è interessante o importante: The bridge was designed by a student, This song has been recorded by hundreds of singers. Se l’agente è sconosciuto, ovvio o irrilevante, by si omette: My bike has been stolen, The results will be announced on Monday.

Consiglio

Per trasformare una frase attiva in passiva, segui quattro passaggi: 1) individua il tempo (have repaired: present perfect); 2) trasforma il complemento oggetto in soggetto (the bridge); 3) metti be allo stesso tempo (has been); 4) aggiungi il participio (repaired). Se dubiti tra been e being: been va nelle forme perfette (has / have / had been) e being in is / are being e was / were being, quando l’azione è in corso adesso o in un momento del passato.

Errori tipici

  • The results will announced on Monday. The results will be announced on Monday. dopo will ci vuole be: will be announced
  • The parcel has sent already. The parcel has already been sent. nel present perfect il passivo vuole been: has already been sent
  • The form has been wrote by Anna. The form has been written by Anna. il participio di write è written, non wrote
  • The car was been repaired when I called. The car was being repaired when I called. nel past continuous ci vuole being, non been: was being repaired
  • The bridge has being closed since Monday. The bridge has been closed since Monday. has being non esiste: dopo has / have ci vuole been
  • The bridge has been repaired yesterday. The bridge was repaired yesterday. con yesterday serve il past simple, anche se in italiano si dice «è stato riparato»
  • The road is repairing now. The road is being repaired now. la strada subisce l’azione, non ripara nulla: serve il passivo is being repaired
  • The form must signed in blue ink. The form must be signed in blue ink. dopo un modale ci vuole be: must be signed
  • The accident was happened yesterday. The accident happened yesterday. happen, arrive e die non hanno il passivo: in italiano «è successo» vuole essere, in inglese no
  • Have been sold all the tickets. All the tickets have been sold. non copiare «sono stati venduti tutti i biglietti»: l’inglese vuole prima il soggetto

Domande frequenti

Prendi il soggetto, be al tempo giusto e il participio passato: has been repaired, had been sold, will be announced, was being repaired, must be signed.

Qual è la differenza tra been e being?

Been compare nelle forme perfette (has been repaired, had been sold) e parla di un’azione conclusa. Being si usa quando l’azione è in corso in un momento preciso: The car was being repaired when I called.

Bisogna sempre mettere by?

No. By si aggiunge solo quando l’agente dà un’informazione nuova (written by a famous author). Se è sconosciuto o ovvio, si omette: My bike has been stolen.

Che differenza c’è tra must be done e has to be done?

Must di solito esprime un obbligo imposto da chi parla o da una regola: The form must be signed. Has to be done è più naturale quando l’obbligo nasce dalle circostanze: The room has to be cleaned before the guests come.

Esiste il passivo con is / are being?

Sì. Is / are being + participio si usa quando l’azione subita dal soggetto è in corso adesso o in questo periodo: The bridge is being repaired. Negativa: isn't being repaired; domanda: Is the bridge being repaired?

I verbi senza complemento oggetto (happen, arrive, die, go) non hanno il passivo: The accident happened, non The accident was happened.
