Although, because, so that introducono una frase (soggetto + verbo). Despite, because of, due to vogliono un nome o una forma in -ing. In order to vuole un verbo alla forma base. However, therefore, moreover aprono una frase nuova e hanno la virgola dopo.
Connettivi per significato e ciò che segue
| Significato | Connettivo | Che cosa segue | Esempio |

| Contrasto | whereas, while | frase (si confrontano due fatti) | Tom is quiet, whereas his sister is very talkative. |

| Scopo | so that | frase (spesso con can, could, will, would) | I wrote it down so that I would remember. |

Contrasto: although o despite
L’italiano «pur essendo stanco» o «nonostante la stanchezza» diventa in inglese Despite being tired, he kept working. Tre modi per dire la stessa cosa: Although he was tired, he kept working. Despite being tired, he kept working. Despite the fact that he was tired, he kept working. Solo con despite the fact that può seguire una frase. Despite non vuole of; in spite of sì.
Whereas e while confrontano due fatti e corrispondono a «mentre» o «invece»: My brother likes sport, whereas I prefer books.
Aggiunta, risultato e punteggiatura
Moreover, furthermore, in addition («inoltre»), however, nevertheless («tuttavia», «comunque») e therefore, as a result, consequently («quindi», «di conseguenza») non uniscono due frasi in una. Aprono una frase nuova, quindi prima c’è un punto o un punto e virgola e dopo una virgola: The plan was expensive. However, the board approved it. Mettere solo una virgola tra due frasi complete è un errore (comma splice), anche se in italiano «però» o «quindi» dopo una virgola sono normali: non si scrive *The plan was expensive, however the board approved it.* Le parole and, but, so, because stanno dentro una sola frase e non hanno virgola dopo.
Per la causa con un nome si usano because of, due to e owing to («a causa di», «per via di»): The match was cancelled because of the rain. Per la causa con una frase, because, as e since («perché», «siccome», «dato che»): The match was cancelled because it rained. As e since possono indicare anche il tempo, quindi per la causa because è più sicuro. Dopo as well as («oltre a») segue un nome o -ing: as well as swimming, non *as well as swim.
Scopo: so that o in order to
«Per» e «affinché» hanno in inglese due soluzioni. Con lo stesso soggetto si usa to o in order to più verbo alla forma base: I study in order to pass. Con soggetti diversi, o se serve un modale, si usa so that e una frase: I gave her my notes so that she could revise. Qui l’inglese non ha il congiuntivo: al posto di «affinché lei studi» si dice so that she can / could study. Anche «perché» può voler dire «affinché» («te lo dico perché tu capisca»): in inglese I’m telling you so that you understand, non *because you understand. Lo scopo negativo è in order not to (non *in order to not*): She whispered in order not to wake the baby. Se la frase principale è al passato, dopo so that vanno could o would; se è al presente o al futuro, can o will.
I sinonimi (although ed even though, despite e in spite of, moreover e furthermore, as a result e consequently, due to e owing to) funzionano allo stesso modo, quindi non serve scegliere tra loro.

Domande frequenti
Dopo although va una frase: Although it rained, we went out. Dopo despite va un nome o -ing: Despite the rain, we went out.
Si può dire despite of?
No. Le forme corrette sono despite e in spite of. L’of compare solo in in spite of.
Quando va la virgola dopo however e therefore?
Quando il connettivo apre una frase nuova, la virgola va dopo: It was late. Therefore, we left.
Qual è la differenza tra so that e in order to?
Dopo so that va una frase, spesso con can, could, will o would: so that she could revise. Dopo in order to va un verbo alla forma base: in order to revise. Con lo stesso soggetto vanno bene entrambi.
Qual è la differenza tra because of e because?
Because of va con un nome: because of the rain. Because introduce una frase: because it rained. Lo stesso vale per due to e owing to: dopo va un nome.
Come si traduce «affinché» in inglese?
Con so that e un verbo coniugato, di solito con can o could, non con il congiuntivo: Bring the keys so that I can lock the door. Se il soggetto è lo stesso, si usa to o in order to.
