La regola in breve
It is / was + elemento in evidenza + who / that + resto della frase. What + proposizione + is / was + elemento in evidenza.
It is / was ... who / that
Prendi la parola che vuoi mettere in risalto e collocala dopo It was; il resto della frase diventa una proposizione introdotta da who o that. Dopo una persona vanno bene entrambi: It was Anna who called e It was Anna that called.
| Frase normale | Frase scissa |
|---|---|
| Anna called me. | It was Anna who called me. |
| I lost the blue folder. | It was the blue folder that I lost. |
| We met in 2010. | It was in 2010 that we met. |
| I saw her at the station. | It was at the station that I saw her. |
| We stayed in because of the rain. | It was because of the rain that we stayed in. |
Il verbo della proposizione si accorda con l’elemento in evidenza: It was my parents who were late, ma It was Tom who was late. Per un fatto passato si dice di norma It was; nella lingua parlata si sente anche It’s Anna who called.
Italiano e inglese: dove cambia
Dopo l’elemento in evidenza l’italiano usa spesso «a + infinito» («è stata Anna a chiamare»); l’inglese usa invece una proposizione con who o that, quindi non esiste *It was Anna to call. Un’altra differenza riguarda i tempi: l’italiano usa il passato prossimo («è stato nel 2010 che ci siamo conosciuti»), mentre l’inglese vuole il past simple, It was in 2010 that we met, perché si parla di un momento concluso. Infine non si ripete il pronome: non si dice *It was Anna who she called.
What + proposizione + is / was
«Quello che mi serve è un po’ di riposo» si dice What I need is a rest. What apre la proposizione (equivale a «quello che» o «ciò che»), poi vengono is o was e l’elemento in evidenza. Il tempo di be di solito coincide con quello del verbo della proposizione: What I need is, ma What she wanted was.
| Frase normale | Frase scissa |
|---|---|
| I need a rest. | What I need is a rest. |
| She wanted a quiet table. | What she wanted was a quiet table. |
| I want some sleep. | All I want is some sleep. |
| I like the view most. | The thing I like most is the view. |
| I left because of the noise. | The reason I left was the noise. |
| We stayed in a small hotel. | The place we stayed was a small hotel. |
Al posto di What puoi usare All («tutto quello che»), The thing, The reason o The place. Dopo All, that è facoltativo: All I want is sleep e All that I want is sleep sono entrambe corrette. Dopo The reason vanno bene The reason I left, The reason why I left e The reason that I left. Queste frasi si possono anche invertire: A rest is what I need, Tom was the one who called.
What happened was ... e What I did was ...
What happened was (that) introduce un fatto: What happened was (that) the train broke down. Per mettere in risalto un’azione si usa What I did was seguito da un verbo: What I did was (to) call the police, What you should do is (to) talk to her. Dopo was o is il verbo può avere to oppure no. La forma in -ing è sbagliata: non *What I did was calling.
Usale per correggere (It was Tom who broke it, not me), per contrapporre (What I need is a holiday, not more work) o per lasciare l’informazione nuova alla fine.

Errori tipici
Was Anna who called me.It was Anna who called me. l’inglese vuole It come soggetto, non si sottintende come in italianoIt was Anna to call me.It was Anna who called me. non esiste «a + infinito»: serve who o that con il verbo coniugatoIt was Anna which called me.It was Anna who called me. dopo una persona si usa who o that, non whichWhich I need is a rest. What I need is a rest. «quello che» si dice what, non whichAll what I want is sleep. All I want is sleep. «tutto quello che» è All I want o All that I want, senza whatIt were my parents who were late.It was my parents who were late. What I did was calling the police. What I did was call the police. dopo What I did was serve il verbo con to o senza to, non la forma in -ingThe thing what I like most is the view. The thing I like most is the view. dopo The thing non si mette what: si omette o si usa that
Domande frequenti
It was Anna who called, What I need is a rest. L’elemento in evidenza viene subito dopo be.
Si dice It was Anna who o It was Anna that?
It was in 2010 that we met.
What I need is... Dopo What viene una proposizione completa e poi is o was, senza it né altri pronomi.
Si dice What I did was call o What I did was to call?
Entrambe sono corrette. La forma in -ing, come What I did was calling, è sbagliata.
Il significato è lo stesso, ma la scissa mette in risalto una parte e di solito corregge o contrappone: It was Tom who broke it, not me. Anche Tom broke it è corretta.
