Scene: office kitchen, Thursday afternoon

Tom: If the restructure had been explained clearly, people would not be speculating in the corridors. Rumours have spread since the announcement was posted without context.

Lena: I agree that communication could have been better, yet some changes were unavoidable after revenue targets were missed. Budgets were cut, roles were merged, and redundant tasks were eliminated by the steering group.

Tom: The steering group asked whether employee input had been collected. As far as I know, surveys were sent, but results were not shared before decisions were made. Had feedback been published, staff would have felt respected even if they disagreed.

Lena: Managers were told to hold team meetings and not to promise positions that had not been confirmed. I was instructed to document concerns and to forward them to HR without editing the tone.

Tom: If I were in leadership, I would organise open forums where questions could be answered directly. Policies would be translated into plain language, and timelines would be posted so that nobody would be left guessing about transfers.

Lena: HR wondered why so many people asked about pension impacts. Legal briefings were prepared, yet complex terms were not simplified for general staff. A helpline was launched, and appointments were booked within hours.

Tom: One engineer reported that his project had been paused without notice. He asked whether his team would be dissolved. His manager advised him to finish documentation and not to discard code that might be reused after priorities were reassigned.

Lena: If projects had been ranked transparently, engineers would have understood why some work was shelved. Resources would have flowed to initiatives that were deemed strategic, and morale might have suffered less among teams whose products were deprioritised.

Tom: Mixed messages appeared when some departments were told to hire while others were told to freeze recruitment. Candidates were interviewed, offers were withdrawn, and reputational damage was mentioned in press commentary.

Lena: The communications director requested that spokespeople stick to approved statements. She asked them not to comment on figures that had not been released publicly. Talking points were circulated, and media training was scheduled for team leads.

Tom: If the company had invested in internal storytelling before the restructure, employees would have connected the plan to long-term goals. Vision documents would have been referenced, and layoffs would not have seemed abrupt.

Lena: Still, several support services have been improved since the change. Mental health resources were expanded, flexible hours were formalised, and mentoring circles were created for staff who had been reassigned.

Tom: A mentor asked me whether I would consider moving to the new analytics unit. I said I would if training were provided and if my current commitments were transitioned responsibly.

Lena: Transitions will be smoother if knowledge transfer sessions are mandatory. Documentation will be archived, passwords will be rotated securely, and clients will be introduced to their new contacts before handovers are completed.

Tom: If we finish this coffee and return to our desks, we should both prepare questions for Friday's town hall.
