La regla principal
It was only when / by / after ... that y It was not until ... that: en la oración subordinada, después de that, el orden es el normal, sin verbo auxiliar delante del sujeto. Strange though it may seem, Much as I admire him: lo que se adelanta va primero y después van el sujeto y el verbo. So great was the demand that, Such was the noise that: tras So y Such se invierten el sujeto y be. La oración normal (We noticed the silence only when the lights went out.) siempre es correcta; estas formas solo añaden peso.
Escindidas con it: only when, only by, not until
Va entre It was y that, y el resto sigue a that con el orden normal: It was only then that I realised, no *It was only then that did I realise. El verbo detrás de who o that concuerda con la parte destacada: It is the parents who are responsible, It was the delays that worried us.
| Estructura | Ejemplo | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| It was only when ... that | It was only when the lights went out that we noticed the silence. |
| It is only by ... that | It is only by listening that you learn. | Solo se aprende escuchando. |
| It was only after ... that | It was only after the vote that the board explained its reasons. |
| It was not until ... that | It was not until 1998 that the bridge reopened. | El puente no reabrió hasta 1998. |
| It is precisely / largely because ... that | It is largely because of the drought that prices rose. |
| It is not X but Y that | It was not the cost but the delay that worried us. |
Compara con B2: Not until midnight did we leave y It was not until midnight that we left son correctas y significan lo mismo. Igual con Only when she left did I notice y It was only when she left that I noticed. It was not until midnight did we leave.
El inglés necesita not delante de until: *It was until 2010 that the bridge reopened pierde el sentido de «no ... hasta». What: What surprised me was that nobody complained.
What, All, The way y el orden inverso
Tras What + cláusula + be puede venir una cláusula con that, la forma base del verbo (con to o sin él) o un par «no X, sino Y»: What surprised me was that nobody complained, What we need to do is (to) wait, What matters is not the price but the quality, All he did was (to) shrug. Después de All no va what: All I asked for was an answer. Para «la manera en que» se dice The way she handled it was remarkable, sin how. That is what I meant, This is why we left, That was when everything changed, That's how she did it, Honesty is what matters most.
Concesión con anteposición: though, as, much as
Se adelanta el adjetivo o el adverbio y se añade though o as, con sujeto y verbo detrás: Strange though it may seem y Strange as it may seem significan lo mismo. Con Much as, la concesión afecta al verbo: Much as I admire him, I cannot support this plan.
Se puede poner primero el complemento directo o un atributo para contrastar: This I cannot accept, That much I know, The first chapter I loved; the second I found dull.
So, Such y comparativos al principio
Tras So + adjetivo, el sujeto va después de be: So great was the demand that the shop ran out. Tras So + adverbio hace falta un auxiliar: So quickly did the tickets sell that .... Tras Such va be, que concuerda con el sintagma nominal: Such was the noise that we left, Such were the delays that .... Los comparativos como More important is the fact that ... o Far more serious were the long-term effects también colocan be delante del sujeto, y be concuerda con el sujeto que viene después.
| Estructura | Ejemplo | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| Adjetivo + though / as + sujeto + verbo | Tired as she was, she kept going. | Aunque estaba cansada, siguió adelante. |
| Much as + sujeto + verbo | Much as I admire him, I cannot support this plan. |
| Complemento adelantado | This I cannot accept. | Esto no lo puedo aceptar. |
| So + adjetivo + be + sujeto + that | So great was the demand that the shop ran out. |
| Such + be + sintagma nominal + that | Such were the delays that we gave up. | Tales fueron los retrasos que nos rendimos. |
| Comparativo + be + sujeto | Far more serious were the long-term effects.
En la conversación es más frecuente la oración normal (I cannot accept this., The demand was so great that ...), y siempre es correcta.

Preguntas frecuentes
¿It wasn't until she called that I understood y Not until she called did I understand significan lo mismo?
¿Se dice Strange though it may seem o Strange as it may seem?
¿Qué significa Try as she might?
Se puede decir may en lugar de might, y la oración principal suele ser negativa: she could not open the lid.
¿Much as o although?
Much as I admire him y Although I admire him very much se parecen, pero Much as suena más solemne. Detrás de Much as, sujeto y verbo van en orden normal; As much as I admire him también es correcto.
¿Es correcto More importantly is the fact that?
No. Delante de be hace falta un adjetivo: More important is the fact that ...
¿Se puede decir the way how?
No. Se dice the way she did it o how she did it, pero that's the way how es incorrecto.
