Cohesión y referencia: this, the former, the latter, such

La cohesión de un texto depende de palabras que remiten hacia atrás o hacia delante: it, they, this + sustantivo resumen (This decision), the former y the latter, that of y those of, such a, did so. Ejemplo: Rents rose. This increase hit families, donde this increase resume la frase anterior.

It y they continúan el mismo tema. This y these con un sustantivo resumen retoman la idea anterior: This decision, These changes. The former y the latter se usan solo con dos cosas nombradas. That of sustituye a un sustantivo singular o incontable, those of a uno plural. Such a + sustantivo singular, such + plural o incontable.

Palabras de referencia: qué sustituyen

Herramientas de cohesión en un texto académico
PalabraA qué remiteEjemplo
it, theya la misma cosa nombrada antes (un sustantivo)The survey was long. It covered ten cities.
this, these + sustantivoa toda la idea que se acaba de decirRents rose. This increase hit families.
the former, the latteral primero o al segundo de dos elementos nombradosTrams and buses: the former are quieter.
that of, those ofa un sustantivo que no queremos repetirThe climate of Spain is milder than that of Norway.
such a, sucha un tipo, «tal»Such a policy needs time.
do so, the same, onea un verbo con sus complementos, una acción o un sustantivoSome left early, and others did so later.
as follows, the followinghacia delante, a lo que viene despuésThe steps were as follows: ...

it o this: la referencia anafórica

En español «esto», «eso» y «ello» cubren it y this, y por eso en inglés sale un This shows... sin sustantivo. Es correcto, pero vago. El inglés académico prefiere un sustantivo que nombre la idea: This finding shows that... Además hay que fijarse en el número: this result, pero these results. It y they repiten un sustantivo concreto y mantienen el mismo tema: The survey was long. It covered ten cities. This y these señalan una idea o una frase entera.

this + sustantivo resumen y sustantivos generales

Un sustantivo resumen (summarising noun) nombra en pocas palabras la frase anterior: Prices doubled in two years. This increase...

the former, the latter, that of, those of

«El primero» y «este último» se parecen a the former y the latter, pero hay un detalle: solo valen para dos elementos. Buses and trams both run at night; the former are cheaper, the latter faster. Con tres o más, se dice the first y the last. Con dos, un error típico es the last en vez de the latter. El verbo concuerda con el sustantivo al que remite (the latter are si son los tranvías). Se escribe the latter, no *the later, y no lleva -s. Es formal y escrito.

El español dice «el de», «los de», y en inglés eso se dice that of (singular o incontable) y those of (plural): The population of Lviv is smaller than that of Kyiv. The results of this study are clearer than those of earlier studies. No existen *this of, *it of ni *these of. Con un incontable no se usa the one: The evidence from Spain is stronger than that from Italy.

such, sustitución y referencia hacia delante

Such significa «tal, de este tipo». Con un sustantivo singular contable lleva artículo: such a policy, such an approach. Con plural o incontable no lleva: such policies, such evidence, such advice. Como en español «una decisión tal» o «tal decisión», salen errores como *a such decision, *such decision o *such an advice. Such measures son medidas de este tipo; these measures son esas medidas concretas. Such as es otra cosa: «como, por ejemplo».

Para no repetir un verbo con sus complementos se usa do so: Participants could withdraw at any time, and three did so. No se dice *did it so ni *made so. The same equivale a «lo mismo»: The same applies to rural schools. One / ones solo van con sustantivos contables: a larger sample than the one used in 2019. Después de if se dice if so o if not. Antes de una lista se escribe as follows o the following, no *as follow ni *as following.

Enlazar con el párrafo siguiente

Un párrafo nuevo suele empezar remitiendo al anterior: These findings suggest that..., Given this, ..., This raises the question of..., In light of these results, ...

Preguntas frecuentes

The former and the latter: significado y cómo se usa

Con tres o más se dice the first y the last.

That of y those of: ¿cuál es la diferencia?

That of va con singular o incontable y those of con plural: the climate of Spain, that of Italy; the results of the first group, those of the second.

Such a o such: ¿cuándo uso cada uno?

Such a (such an) va ante un sustantivo singular contable: such a policy. Ante un plural o un incontable no lleva artículo: such policies, such evidence. La forma a such no existe.

This o it en un texto: ¿cómo elijo?

El número también debe coincidir: this result, these results.

¿Cuándo uso do so?

Do so sustituye a un verbo con sus complementos ya mencionado: Some students withdrew, and others did so later. Las formas son do so, did so, doing so y to do so. No se dice did it so.

¿Se dice as follows o as follow?

Se dice as follows, con -s, antes de una lista: The steps were as follows. También es correcto the following: The following were recorded.
