We gathered in the living room and looked at the bare walls and clean wooden floor. Sunlight entered through the windows and made the space feel larger than it really is today. Everything seemed new and a little strange, but also full of promise for the months ahead. Mom opened the balcony door and let in cool air from the park below our window.
We built our beds before dinner because we wanted a proper place to sleep that night. Dad found the screws in a small bag near the toolbox in the hallway closet. Mia and I held the wooden frames while he worked with quiet focus and calm instructions. The work took an hour. The beds felt strong when we finished and tested each one carefully.
Mom prepared sandwiches in the kitchen and heated soup on the stove for a quick meal together. We shared food at a table we brought from our old house and talked about where to place the sofa next week. The bread tasted good, and we enjoyed cold water from plastic cups after a long day of lifting. Later we rested on the floor and listened to music from a small speaker near the window until ten.
After dinner I sat on the floor and opened a box of books near the empty bookshelf. I found my favourite novel near the top under a stack of notebooks and old travel tickets. Mia found her sketch pad under some towels and smiled for the first time since morning. We were happy to see familiar things again in an unfamiliar space that would become our home soon.
The kitchen clock ticked softly while rain started outside and the city lights appeared one by one. Dad closed the balcony door and checked the lock twice before we relaxed in the living room together. Mom listed tasks for the next morning on a note and pinned it to the fridge with a small magnet.
