My class sang a folk song about rivers and boats. We practised the words until we knew every line by heart. Two boys played small drums while three girls held bright paper lanterns during the chorus.
Parents and guests began to arrive at six o'clock in the evening. They sat in rows near the front and left space for late families by the side doors. The hall felt warm with lights and quiet talk before the show started.
The concert began when Mr Dean stood at the front and gave a short welcome. He told us to smile and breathe slowly before each song. I felt nervous at first, but my friend Rosa sat beside me and squeezed my hand gently.
The youngest children sang first. They wore reindeer hats and moved in a small circle on the stage. Everyone in the audience clapped when they finished, and some parents took photos near the aisle.
Next came a piano piece from a student named Eli. He sat alone at the keyboard and played a calm winter melody we heard for the first time that night. He kept his eyes on the keys and never looked away until the last note.
When our turn came, we walked to the centre of the stage in a straight line. I held my lantern carefully and sang the first verse with the rest of the class. Rosa stood to my left and Jake stood to my right with his drum.
We sang the chorus twice because the audience clapped in the middle and wanted to hear it again. Mr Dean smiled from the side and nodded when we reached the final line together. I forgot my fear and enjoyed the bright lights on our faces.
After our song, the jazz group played a lively piece with saxophone and guitar. They wore black shirts and stood in a half circle near the back of the stage. The music made people tap their feet in the front rows.
Near the end, all the performers came back for one last song about friendship and winter nights. We sang together while parents recorded videos on their phones. The hall felt full of energy and happy voices from every corner.
When the concert finished, we met our families near the entrance doors.
