In the afternoon we play games on the lawn. Dan explains his card game to me. His voice is clear and my ears learn fast. May draws our faces in her sketchbook. Her lines are neat and the pictures look real. My sister watches and asks to try May's pencils. May lets her pick a color from her box.
Before dinner my grandpa walks with us to see his fruit trees at the back. His steps are slow but steady. His trees have green apples and small plums. He tells us their names and their history. I listen and try to remember.
At night we sit in her living room. Their suitcase is open on the floor. Dan shows me his cards again. May writes in her diary at the table. Our grandparents sit in their chairs and watch. The clock on her wall ticks softly. The evening ends with warm tea and their old family stories.
