We left school at eight in the morning. Our bus was yellow and full of noise. I sat next to my friend Dan. His lunch box was enormous. His mom had packed his favorite sandwiches and his water bottle. My bag had my notebook and my camera.
Mrs Hall stood at the front of the bus. Her list was in her hand. She checked our names and smiled. Her voice was loud above the noise. She told us to keep our bags on our laps. Our bus driver said his route would take an hour.
The other class from our school came too. Their teacher is Mr Fox. His hair is gray and his voice is calm. His class wears green jackets. Our class wears blue ones. The colors help the adults find us in the forest. Their bag of first aid supplies stayed near Mr Fox.
At the park we walked in two groups. Our guide was a young woman named Sara. Her knowledge of the forest was impressive. She knew every tree by its name. She showed us its bark, its leaves, and its roots. Dan wrote in his notebook. I took pictures with my camera.
In the middle of the trail we stopped at a stream. Some students sat on their bags to rest. Mrs Hall filled her water bottle at the stream tap. Her advice was to drink often. My water bottle was almost empty so I was glad for her reminder.
The other class went left at the fork. Their path was longer and hillier. Mr Fox checked his map carefully. His group disappeared between the tall trees. Our path went right toward the lake. Sara led us down a slope with roots and stones.
The lake was quiet and blue. Its surface was still in the morning light. We ate our lunch on the grass. Dan opened his enormous box and shared his extra cookies. I gave him some of my fruit. Our picnic felt peaceful in the warm air.
On the bus home Mrs Hall collected our notes. She said their quality was very good. My notes had twelve tree names and four bird names. Dan's notes had pictures and arrows. Their detail surprised her. She promised to use our notes in next week's class.
Back at school I told my parents about the day. My mom liked my photos. My dad said our school trips sound better than his trips at my age. I smiled and put my notebook on my desk. I will read it again tomorrow before class.
