Start each session with a short warm-up. Stand up and shake your hands. Let the tension leave your fingers. Roll your neck slowly to the left, then to the right. Do not force it. Stop if you feel pain.
Walk around the room without speaking. Do not look at the floor. Look forward. Make eye contact with the people you pass. Smile or nod. Do not speak yet. Just walk and observe.
Ms Reed then gives a simple task. Pick up an imaginary object. Feel its weight in your hands. Show the others what it is without speaking. Do not explain with words. Use your body. Move your hands and face.
Work with a partner for the next exercise. Stand face to face. Mirror your partner's movements. Start slowly. Follow every move your partner makes. Do not lead — only follow. After one minute, switch roles. Lead your partner through a slow sequence.
Listen to a short piece of music next. Close your eyes. Feel the rhythm. Do not analyze the music. Just let it in. When Ms Reed stops the music, open your eyes and stand in a shape that shows how it made you feel. Do not think too long.
Speak a line from a short poem. Project your voice to the back wall. Do not shout. Breathe before each line. Open your mouth fully. Speak clearly. Pause between each line. Let the words fill the room.
Give feedback to your classmates. Say what you noticed. Use kind words. Do not say it was bad. Say try speaking more slowly or try looking at us. Keep your comments short and useful.
Come to drama class with an open mind every week. Let go of your worries at the door. Try everything at least once. Do not worry about looking silly. Everyone does. That is the point. Drama teaches us to be brave and present.
