I hope your exams finished well last week. You asked about my garden, so I wanted to describe the busy days I spent outside before the cold weather arrived.
On Monday I planted new lettuce rows near the back fence. The soil looked dry, so I watered every bed twice and checked the tomato stakes before lunch. A neighbour stopped and mentioned that frost might arrive early this year, but I smiled and continued with my gloves on.
Tuesday rained lightly in the morning. I stayed inside and planned next season in my notebook. I labeled seed packets, sorted old pots on the shelf, and repaired a broken handle on my wheelbarrow. When the sky cleared, I walked to the shed and organized tools that cluttered the floor.
On Wednesday I harvested carrots and pulled weeds between the bean plants. I washed vegetables in the kitchen sink and packed half of them in a box for your aunt. She arrived after work, tasted a small carrot, and thanked me with a short hug at the door.
Thursday felt warmer. I trimmed the hedge along the path and collected fallen leaves in paper bags. I listened to the radio while I worked, and a blackbird watched from the apple tree. I rested on the bench and drank tea before I continued with the rake.
Friday brought a delivery of compost. I spread it carefully around the rose bushes and turned the soil near the herb patch. I noticed slugs near the cabbage leaves, so I picked them up with gloves and moved them far from the vegetables.
On Saturday your cousin Tom helped me for two hours. We painted the garden gate green and fixed a loose plank on the small deck. Tom carried buckets while I mixed paint in an old tray. We talked about your studies and laughed when a gust of wind flipped a page in my notebook.
Sunday I relaxed and watched the clouds from the kitchen window. I photographed the beds for my album and wrote prices on jars of jam I stored last summer. I felt tired but satisfied when I closed the garden diary for the week.
