Letter one, early spring

Dear Ana,

It is your postcard from Lisbon that reminded me to write after months of silence. What I appreciated was the honesty about your difficult semester abroad. All I want you to know is that distance has not reduced my interest in your news.

The reason why I delayed replying was work, not indifference. What kept me busy was a certification course I finally completed last week. It is accomplishment that feels sweeter when shared, so I am sharing it now.

Letter two, midsummer

Dear Ana,

Your description of the internship made me laugh aloud on the tram. What surprised me was how quickly you adapted to laboratory culture. It was your mentor who saw potential I always recognised from our university days.

Summer here means evening walks by the lake. The place where we used to sit is now crowded with musicians on weekends. What I miss is our quiet conversations, yet what I enjoy is imagining your stories layered over the noise.

Letter three, autumn

Dear Ana,

It is trust that sustains friendships across seasons and time zones. What I learned this autumn is that brief messages matter as much as long letters when schedules tighten. All you need to do is continue sending fragments of your life; I will assemble them with care.

The thing that moved me was your offer to visit during the holiday break. The reason why that offer matters is simple: shared meals restore connection faster than polished prose.

Letter four, winter

Dear Ana,

Snow arrived early, and the city glows under lamps at four in the afternoon. What I hope for the new year is health for your family and courage for new projects you mentioned in December.

It is not perfection that friendship requires. What friendship requires is return, again and again, to the willingness to listen. It was your last letter that convinced me we still speak the same language of loyalty beneath different accents and routines.

With affection,
Marta

Letter five, early spring again

Dear Ana,

It is spring rain that makes your latest photo of cobblestones shine in my inbox. What I notice in that photo is the same eye for detail you applied to laboratory notes you once showed me. All I mean is that your way of seeing persists across disciplines you explore.

What your recent message clarified is uncertainty about returning home after contracts abroad. It is uncertainty that deserves space without premature reassurance from friends who miss you. The reason why I withhold easy answers is respect for complexity you narrate honestly.

Letter six, midsummer again

Dear Ana,

It is your brother's wedding invitation that arrived yesterday and made me smile at memories of dancing badly together at graduation. What graduation feels like from this distance is a room I can enter only through letters and photographs you send. All I want at such moments is to remind you that absence measures affection poorly when affection remains active in writing.
