Football, also called soccer, is the most popular team sport in the world. Two teams of eleven players compete on a rectangular field. The goal is to score by kicking the ball into the opponent's net. Players cannot use their hands or arms, except the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper can touch the ball inside the penalty area. A match lasts ninety minutes, divided into two halves of forty-five minutes each.
Basketball is played on a court with two hoops at each end. Each team has five players on the court. Players score points by shooting the ball through the opponent's hoop. A basket inside the three-point line counts as two points. A basket outside the line counts as three points. Free throws are worth one point each. Players dribble the ball to move around the court. They cannot run with the ball without dribbling.
Volleyball is played on a court divided by a high net. Two teams of six players try to score points by hitting the ball over the net. The ball must not touch the ground on your side. Players can touch the ball three times before sending it over the net. A point is scored when the ball touches the ground on the opponent's side or when the opponent makes a mistake.
Handball is similar to basketball but played with hands. Two teams of seven players pass and throw a ball to score in the opponent's goal. Players can take three steps with the ball before they must pass or shoot. They cannot hold the ball for more than three seconds. The game is fast and requires good passing skills.
Rugby is a physical contact sport with an oval ball. Two teams try to carry the ball over the opponent's goal line. Players can pass the ball backwards but not forwards. Tackling is allowed to stop the opponent. Players must be strong and work together as a team. There are different types of rugby with different rules.
In most team sports, referees or umpires enforce the rules. They watch the game and make decisions. If a player breaks a rule, the referee gives a penalty. The penalty might be a free kick, a free throw, or a time penalty. Serious fouls can result in a yellow or red card. A red card means the player must leave the game.
Teams usually have a coach who gives instructions during the game. The coach can make substitutions to replace tired players. Each sport has rules about how many substitutions are allowed. Time-outs give teams a chance to rest and plan their strategy.
Fair play is very important in team sports. Players should respect their opponents and the referee. Good sportsmanship means playing honestly and accepting defeat gracefully.
