We stay at a farmhouse about two hours from the city. There is a big kitchen downstairs where the farmer''s wife makes breakfast for everyone. She can cook very well. She makes fresh eggs and warm bread. There are fields all around the house. There are cows in one field and sheep in another. My brother can name every animal.
On Saturday morning we go for a long walk. My father can read a map well and he leads the way. There is a forest path that goes up a small hill. At the top there is a beautiful view of the valley below. We can see three villages from there. My mother takes many photos. We sit on a wooden bench and eat our sandwiches.
At the bottom of the hill my brother and I find a stream. There are small fish in the clear water. My brother wants to catch one but he can''t. I can see them from the bank but I can''t catch them either. We laugh and throw small stones.
In the afternoon we go to a village market. There are local farmers selling vegetables and fresh cheese. I can try a piece of hard cheese. It is very good. There is also a stall with apple juice from the orchard next door. My parents buy two bottles.
On Sunday morning we help on the farm. I can collect eggs from the chicken house. The chickens can move very quickly. My brother can carry a bucket of water for the animals. My father can drive the small tractor for five minutes while the farmer watches.
Before we leave, the farmer''s wife gives us a bag of tomatoes from her garden. There aren''t many tomatoes at this time of year, but there are enough for a good salad. We say thank you and drive home.
I love the countryside because there is quiet, there is fresh air, and there are animals everywhere. We can leave the noise of the city behind for two days. I hope we can go back next summer.
