We ran to the tents because the rain started quickly. Anna was carrying plates when she slipped on wet grass. She did not drop anything, but her shoes were soaked within a minute.
While we were hiding inside, the wind shook the tent lines. I was listening to the rain when Ben asked if our bags were dry. They were not completely dry because one flap stayed open.
At seven o'clock the storm was still blowing. We were sitting close together and sharing dry bread. Did anyone feel cold? Yes, we all felt cold, but nobody wanted to leave the lake that night.
When the thunder moved away, the rain became softer. I was looking through the tent door when I saw stars between the clouds. Ben was smiling because the worst part seemed finished.
We were talking quietly while the fire hissed in the wet grass. Anna was drying her hair with a towel when she noticed smoke from the embers. The fire was not burning well, but it still gave us a little warmth.
After an hour the sky cleared. We were walking to the shore when frogs began to call in the reeds. I was taking photos when a fish jumped near the surface. The lake looked calm again.
We did not sleep much that night because the ground stayed damp. I was waking every hour when I heard small animals near the tent. Ben was snoring softly while Anna wrote notes in her diary.
In the morning we packed slowly. We were folding wet clothes when the sun warmed our backs. Did the trip feel like a failure? No, it did not feel like a failure at all.
We were laughing about the storm while we drank hot tea. I was telling the story again when a family walked past on the path. They were listening and smiling at our wet boots.
We left the campsite at noon and drove home along the narrow road. I was thinking about the lightning when Anna played music in the car. Ben was sleeping in the back seat because he did not rest well.
Last Friday taught us that weather can change fast near the water. We were cooking, we were running, and we were laughing together before the day ended. I did not forget that trip, and we planned to return in August when the nights stay warmer.

Past Continuous + when + Past Simple
