I was holding a torch while Dad was turning the small screws on the wheel. Mom was cooking upstairs, and our dog was sleeping on a mat near the door. Everything felt calm until the phone rang in the kitchen.
Mom was answering when Mr Shaw, our neighbour, said water was leaking into his hall from our side. Dad was wiping his hands on a cloth when Mom called him quickly. We were running outside together to see the problem.
While Dad was looking at the pipe under the kitchen window, Mr Shaw was pointing to a wet patch on his wall. Water was dripping slowly onto a bucket he was holding. I was fetching old towels from the laundry room.
Dad was turning off the outside tap when the dripping stopped. He was explaining that a joint was loose after the cold week last month. Mr Shaw was nodding and saying he was glad we were home.
We were working in the garage again after tea when Dad finished the bike repair. I was testing the brakes on the drive while he was tightening the last bolt. The wheels were spinning smoothly under the street light.
Mom was bringing us hot tea when Mr Shaw knocked with a slice of cake. He was thanking Dad again and was asking about tools for a shelf in his shed. They were talking like old friends while I was riding slow circles on the fixed bike.
Later I was doing homework at the table when Dad was reading the news online. Mom was telling us the leak was small and easy to fix. I was thinking how one phone call changed our quiet evening plans.
Before bed I was writing in my journal about helpful neighbours and squeaky brakes. Dad was checking the tap one more time when I was going upstairs. The house was quiet, and the bike was ready for my ride to school.
That Wednesday showed how small problems can connect people on the same street. Dad was fixing, water was dripping, and neighbours were sharing tools and cake before night came. When I went to sleep, the garage was clean, and the hall next door was dry again.
