Ana loves chopping vegetables, and she helps Dad because she wants to learn new recipes. I like washing dishes after we eat, but Dad prefers that I stir sauces on the stove while he cuts meat and fish.
Do you cook with your family on Sundays? My friend Ben does not cook often, but he likes tasting our food when we invite him. Last month we made soup for him, and he thanked us because the flavour reminded him of his grandmother's kitchen.
At six fifteen Dad puts pasta in boiling water, and Ana adds salt because the recipe says so. I set the table in the dining room, and I place napkins beside each plate for Mom when she arrives from work at seven.
Mom does not always join us at the start, but she likes seeing the kitchen busy when she opens the door. She hugs Ana and me, and she asks if we remembered to feed the cat in the morning.
On the first Sunday in May we tried a new dish with tomatoes and herbs from the market. Dad bought them on Saturday at the farmers' stall, and Ana picked fresh basil because she loves the smell of green leaves in warm rooms.
Does Ana like spicy food? She does not enjoy very hot peppers, but she likes mild curry with rice on cold evenings in winter. Dad taught her to taste sauce before serving it, and she always offers him a spoon because he trusts her judgment.
I enjoy listening to music while we cook, and Dad plays old songs on the radio at low volume. Ana sings softly, and sometimes she makes me laugh because she forgets words but keeps the rhythm with a wooden spoon.
At seven we sit together, and Mom tells us about her day at the office on Bridge Road. We pass bread to her, and she passes salad to Ana because sharing feels natural at our table.
After dinner I wash plates, and Ana dries them on the counter near the window. Dad wipes the stove, and he thanks us because teamwork makes Sunday evenings calm and happy.
Do you help at home after meals? I do not mind cleaning because I like seeing a tidy kitchen before bed. Ana does not love washing pots, but she helps me when I ask, and we finish faster when we work as a team.
On some Sundays we bake simple cakes for Monday lunch at school. Ana loves decorating with fruit, and I like writing small labels for each box. Dad stores them in the fridge overnight, and he reminds us to take them in the morning.
These evenings matter to us because food brings our family close after a busy week.
