Long road home: perfect aspect (B1)

When the airline had cancelled our connecting flight in Frankfurt, my brother and I had not expected to spend an unplanned night in a city we had visited only once before. What had seemed like a simple journey from Nairobi to Manchester became a story we have retold at every family gathering since that winter.

We had left Kenya after three years because our contracts had ended and our parents had asked us to return for a wedding. The morning had started calmly. We had checked in online, had passed security without delay, and had boarded a plane that had departed on time. By midday everything had changed.

Ground staff had explained that mechanical problems had forced the crew to delay departure. Passengers had waited in the gate area while technicians had inspected the aircraft. After two hours the airline had offered hotel vouchers because the repair had taken longer than anyone had predicted.

In the city we had found a small hotel near the station. Reception had given us rooms on a floor that had recently been renovated. Exhausted, we had slept until alarms had reminded us to rebook flights. I had called our aunt in Manchester while Tomas had searched for seats on morning departures.

The next day we had reached the airport before dawn. Security had moved slowly because staff had changed shifts at the same moment crowds had arrived. We had nearly missed boarding when my bag had triggered an extra inspection. An officer had apologised after he had found nothing suspicious.

Finally we had landed in Manchester in the late afternoon, twenty-six hours later than planned. Our aunt had waited at arrivals even though we had promised to call when we had cleared customs. She had brought soup she had cooked because she had guessed we would arrive tired and hungry.

Since that trip I have travelled with more patience. Delays have happened again, though none have matched the scale of that winter journey. Tomas has kept the boarding passes in a folder he had labelled Travel Stories, and sometimes we have looked at them when plans have fallen apart unexpectedly.

The experience had taught us that arrival matters less than how calmly we have responded to obstacles. Family had welcomed us warmly despite the disruption. The wedding had proceeded beautifully the following day, and relatives had laughed when we had described Frankfurt hotels and missed connections.

Years later the memory has remained vivid not because the trip had failed, but because we had adapted together. We had navigated unfamiliar streets, had negotiated with airline staff, and had supported each other when frustration had threatened to overwhelm good humour. Those hours have become part of the bond we have maintained into adulthood.

Travel rarely follows the straight lines maps suggest. Storms, technical faults, and human error have interrupted journeys people had planned for months. When I advise friends who have worried about complicated routes, I have shared this story as proof that most problems have resolved eventually.
