Our journey home was scheduled to take five hours , but it evolved into an epic thirty - six - hour overland odyssey across three countries . Our travel complications began early on Sunday morning when airport authorities announced that heavy snow had grounded all flights across Switzerland . The airline had cancelled our afternoon flight before we even cleared airport security . Realizing that air travel was completely paralyzed , Arthur and I hurried to the central railway station . We boarded an overnight passenger train to Paris , but fallen trees on the alpine tracks delayed our locomotive by four hours . By the time we reached the French capital , we had missed our Eurostar connection to London . Despite the freezing exhaustion and endless railway transfers , our journey has remained one of our most treasured personal memories . We shared hot croissants with friendly French passengers in a Gare du Nord waiting room , laughed at our comical misfortunes , and helped an elderly tourist carry her luggage across snowy platforms . Over the past year , Arthur and I have retold this chaotic travel adventure at dozens of dinner gatherings . Shared adversity consistently transforms stressful travel mishaps into heartwarming tales of human kindness . Navigating unexpected travel dilemmas with good humor reveals the generosity of strangers in foreign places . Facing unforeseen challenges together strengthens lifelong bonds between adventurous traveling companions . Have you ever experienced severe transit delays or missed connections during an international journey ? What travel alternatives had you explored before you finally reached your destination ?
