Our history teacher Mr Doyle covered one wall with a long paper timeline. Each student added cards about family events, and the display became a lesson in present perfect versus past simple without a formal lecture.

At the left, cards show finished dates. My classmate Jay wrote: My grandfather retired in 2015. He worked at a steel plant for thirty years. Another card says: We moved to this town in 2018. The ink is blue, and the year is underlined twice.

Near the centre, cards use since and still. Aisha pinned: I have played violin since I was seven. Her bow grip has improved this term. Ben added: Our band has practiced in the garage since September. The noise has annoyed one neighbour, he joked.

On the right, recent past simple events sit beside present perfect results. Mia's card reads: I broke my arm in 2020. I have been careful on icy paths since then. Two years ago she slipped on school steps. Since that fall she has worn boots with better grip.

Mr Doyle asked us to read pairs aloud. Tom said, "My parents met in 1999." Then he added, "They have lived on Hill Road since 2001." First sentence closes at a year. Second opens a period that continues.

Another pair from Lara: "I visited Dublin last Easter." Followed by, "I have wanted to return since that trip." The holiday ended on a calendar page. The wish still lives today.

We walked along the timeline and placed new cards. I wrote: My sister started university in 2022. She has studied biology since then. Yesterday she called home, and she said she has passed two exams this month. Last week she failed a quiz, but she has not lost confidence.

Mr Doyle circled signal words in chalk. For past simple he wrote yesterday, ago, in plus year, last plus week or month. For present perfect he wrote since, for, ever, never, so far, recently, yet, already. He said context matters more than lists, but lists help at the start.

At the end of class we photographed the wall for our portfolios. I have kept the picture on my phone since Friday. Last Friday feels recent, yet the lesson already belongs to a finished school day. The timeline itself has stayed on the wall, and it has reminded every visitor that time grammar is visible if you mark where a story closes and where it still breathes.

Try this at home. Draw a line. Put past simple cards on fixed dates. Put present perfect cards on bridges that touch today. Read both sides aloud until the contrast sounds natural.
