Our city library is calm and bright. Near the entrance, a large sign is posted so every visitor sees the rules before walking inside. Additional notices are displayed on each floor.

Silence is requested in the reading room. Mobile phones are switched off or set to silent mode, and loud conversations are moved to the café area. Staff are trained to remind visitors politely when noise is made.

Reference books are marked with red labels and are not taken home. They are used only inside the building, and pages are protected with clear covers. Maps and dictionaries are shelved near the enquiry desk.

Computers are shared by many users. Sessions are limited to one hour when others are waiting, and passwords are not saved on public machines. Printing is paid at the front counter, and documents are collected within ten minutes.

Food and drink are restricted. Water is permitted in sealed bottles, but hot drinks are not allowed near paper collections. Tables are wiped after use, and crumbs are removed so insects are not attracted.

Children under ten must be accompanied by an adult. Toys are stored in a corner box, and picture books are returned to low shelves. Story time is held on Saturdays, and seats are reserved for registered families.

Photography is controlled in special collections. Flash is not used, and tripods are forbidden without written permission. Rare manuscripts are shown behind glass, and gloves are worn when handling is permitted.

Group study rooms are booked online. Keys are collected at reception, and rooms are locked when sessions end. Whiteboards are cleaned, and chairs are pushed in before the next group arrives.

Lost property is kept for thirty days. Umbrellas, scarves, and notebooks are labelled with the date they were found. Unclaimed items are donated to charity shops at the end of each month.

Accessibility features are maintained carefully. Ramps are checked each morning, and lifts are serviced monthly. Large-print books are shelved together, and audio titles are available on portable players.

Events are advertised on a digital screen. Author talks are listed two weeks ahead, and tickets are free but must be reserved. Seats are numbered so late arrivals are guided to empty places.

Volunteers are welcomed after training. Shelves are reorganised on quiet afternoons, and new books are covered in protective film. Suggestions from readers are recorded and are passed to purchasing staff.

When rules are respected, the library remains a refuge for study and discovery. Knowledge is shared openly, and every visitor is treated with equal courtesy. That atmosphere is created because simple expectations are posted clearly and are followed by staff and readers alike.
