I am Laura. My partner Miguel and I want to visit Portugal next July. We have never been there together, so we talk about the trip every evening after dinner.

If Miguel finishes his project before June, he will take two full weeks off work. If his deadline moves, we will shorten the holiday but still go. If I pass my language exam in May, I will practice Portuguese phrases before we leave.
If we rent a car, we will drive to the coast south of Lisbon. If driving feels stressful, we will use trains instead. If we stop in small towns, we will try local seafood restaurants.
If our budget allows, we will take a surfing lesson. If the lesson is fully booked, we will book a cooking class. If we enjoy the class, we will bring recipes home to our friends.
If we document the trip with photos, we will make an album for our families. If the phone battery dies, we will buy a paper map at the airport. If we lose the map, we will ask locals for directions because people there are usually helpful.
We also discuss what we will do if something unexpected happens. If one of us feels ill abroad, we will rest and change our schedule. If we lose a wallet, we will call the bank immediately and use the backup card we plan to carry separately. If a train strike occurs, we will explore the neighbourhood on foot instead of getting angry.
Miguel wants to learn more Portuguese before we leave. If he studies thirty minutes daily, he will order food confidently in local restaurants. If I listen to podcasts during my commute, I will recognise common phrases when we arrive. If we both make an effort, locals will appreciate our attempt even when we make mistakes.
Our families are excited too. If my parents visit us in Lisbon for two days, we will show them the old tram routes. If Miguel's brother cannot join us, we will send photos every evening so he feels part of the experience. If we collect small gifts along the way, we will have meaningful souvenirs instead of expensive trinkets.
