I am Mia. Last month my neighbour Mrs Lane flew to Lisbon, and she asked me to look after her dog, Pepper. I said yes because I wanted to help out, and I thought it would be fun to take care of a friendly animal for seven days.
On the first morning I woke up early and got up before seven. Pepper was already waiting by the door, so I let him out into the small garden. He ran around happily, and I picked up his toy when he dropped it near the fence.
Mrs Lane left clear notes on the kitchen table. She wrote that I should fill in the chart on the fridge every time I fed him or walked him. I wrote down each walk time carefully because I did not want to let her down.
At nine I took Pepper out for a longer walk. He tried to run off when he saw a squirrel, but I called him back and he came back quickly. On the path we came across another dog, and the two animals sniffed each other before moving on.
When we got back home, I cleaned up a little mud near the door and hung up his lead. Pepper sat down and watched me turn on the radio softly. He seemed to calm down after the excitement outside.
At lunch I warmed up some soup for myself and gave Pepper his bowl. He ate quickly and then lay down on the rug. I put away the dishes and checked in with Mrs Lane by text. She wrote back that Pepper usually dozed off after meals.
In the afternoon I had to go out for an hour. I turned off the lights, locked the door, and dropped off a parcel at the post office on my way. When I came back, Pepper was waiting inside and wagged his tail as if he had been lonely.
That evening Mrs Lane's son called to ask how things were going. I told him Pepper was fine and that we had hung out in the garden after dinner. The son laughed and said Pepper always tried to sneak in when people sat down outside.
On day two I woke up to rain. Pepper did not want to go out at first, but I put on my coat and encouraged him. We walked quickly around the block, and I wiped his paws when we came in. I threw away the dirty towel and turned up the heating slightly.
Midweek Mrs Lane's friend stopped by to drop off extra food. She rang up first, so I was ready when she showed up at the gate. We chatted briefly, and she pointed out that Pepper looked healthy and happy.
One afternoon Pepper knocked over a plant pot in the hall. Soil spilled everywhere, so I cleaned up the mess and moved the pot to a safer corner. Pepper looked guilty, but I did not get angry because accidents happen when dogs run around indoors.
