I am Priya. In January my doctor suggested I cut down on sugar, and I decided to give up sweets completely for thirty days. My friend Leo said he would join in, and we wrote down our rules on a shared note.

We agreed to give up biscuits, chocolate, fizzy drinks, and sugary cereal. We could still eat fruit, but we would cut down on juice. Leo wanted to give in on weekends, yet I asked him to stick with the plan until we finished the month.

On day one I woke up and got rid of every sweet snack in my cupboard. I threw away half a box of cookies and gave away unopened candy to a colleague. Leo dropped off his stash at my place so we would not tempt each other at home.

At work people brought cake for a birthday. I almost gave in when I smelled frosting, but Leo sent me a message to hold on and drink water instead. I turned down a slice politely and explained that I was giving up sugar for a health challenge.

During the first week I ate out twice. At the restaurant I asked the waiter to leave out sauce on my chicken because it might contain sugar. Leo ordered salad and told the server to cut down dressing on the side. We checked labels when we shopped and put back items with hidden syrup.

My energy felt strange at first. I wanted to doze off in the afternoon, yet I tried to work out lightly after work. Leo and I hung out in the park and walked fast to keep up our mood. We found out that herbal tea helped when cravings showed up.

Midmonth Leo ran out of willpower at a cinema and bought popcorn with caramel. He came back looking guilty, but I said one slip would not ruin the experiment if he got back on track. The next day he gave up cinema snacks and brought nuts from home instead.

I looked up recipes for sugar-free desserts and came up with a yogurt bowl topped with seeds. Ana tasted it and pointed out that it still felt like a treat. We shared the idea with colleagues, and three people decided to cut down sugar too.

By week three my taste buds changed. Fruit seemed sweeter, and I did not miss chocolate as much. Leo said he slept better and woke up without feeling sluggish. We wrote down weekly notes about mood, skin, and concentration.

On the final day we did not rush to eat cake. Instead we cooked a proper dinner and toasted with sparkling water. We had given up sugar for thirty days, learned to read labels, and proved we could change habits when we supported each other.

Giving up something difficult teaches patience. You cut down gradually, turn down offers politely, throw away temptation, and find out what your body feels like without excess sugar. Phrasal verbs like give up and cut down appear whenever people talk about health goals.
