Laptop repair: phrasal verbs (B1)

I am Omar. Yesterday my laptop broke down in the middle of an important video call, and I spent the evening trying to figure out what went wrong. The whole experience was full of phrasal verbs that people use when technology fails.

First the screen froze, then the machine shut off by itself. I tried to turn it on again, but nothing happened. I unplugged the charger, waited thirty seconds, and plugged it in once more. Still no response.

I called my colleague Rina and asked whether she could help me work out the problem. She suggested I hold on while she looked up common fixes online. Two minutes later she told me to take out the battery if the model allowed it, but mine was sealed inside.

At the repair shop the next morning, the technician asked me to log in so he could run tests. He found out that the fan had worn out and dust had built up inside. He pointed out that I should clean the vents regularly and not let the device overheat on soft surfaces.

While I waited, I filled in a form with my contact details and wrote down the serial number from the base. The shop assistant rang up their supplier to check whether parts were in stock. She came back smiling and said they could fix it by Friday.

I decided to borrow a spare laptop from work so I would not fall behind on tasks. IT support dropped off a loan unit at noon. I set it up quickly, logged in to my accounts, and carried on with emails from a café nearby.

On Wednesday the technician called to say the repair was finished. I picked up the laptop after lunch and tested it at home. Everything worked, though he advised me to back up files and shut down properly at night.

That week taught me to deal with tech problems calmly. Machines break down, fans wear out, and people look up solutions or ring up support. When you find out the cause, you can sort out the issue and get back to work.
