I am Hannah. Tomorrow I have an interview at a design studio, and tonight I must prepare every detail. I turn my desk lamp on and turn it on so I can see my notes clearly.

I pick my printed CV up from the printer tray and pick it up, checking the margins twice. I write the company address down in my diary and write it down beside the appointment time. I look the studio location up on a map and look it up to plan the route.

My friend calls for encouragement. I pick the phone up and pick it up, speaking calmly though I feel nervous. She tells me to put a confident smile on and put it on before I enter the building. I laugh, yet her advice helps.

After the call I hang the phone up and hang it up. I take my old interview shoes out of the box and take them out, polishing them until they gleam. I put the shoes on briefly to test the fit and put them on, then I take them off again and take them off to keep the soles clean.

In the bathroom I wipe the mirror off and wipe it off so my reflection looks sharp. I hang my suit up on the shower rail and hang it up to release wrinkles. I switch the iron on and switch it on, then I turn the steam setting up and turn it up for the collar.

Back at the desk I fill the application form in online and fill it in carefully. I write my reference numbers down and write them down where the portal asks. I read each question twice before I hand the form in electronically and hand it in before midnight.

I set my alarm for six and set it up on my phone with two backups. I pack my bag: I pick my portfolio up and pick it up, then I put my notebook into the bag and put it in with a pen. I take a bottle of water out of the cupboard and take it out for the journey.

Before bed I switch the bedroom light off and switch it off, yet my mind keeps working. I turn the lamp on again and turn it on to reread the job description. I look several terms up in a dictionary and look them up when the language feels formal.

I take my glasses off and take them off, placing them on the book. I hang my bag up on the chair and hang it up so I will not forget it. I throw anxious thoughts away as well as I can and throw them away by breathing slowly.

Morning will come quickly. If I pick each task up one at a time and pick it up with focus, the separable patterns that felt tricky last month now sound natural: turn it on, write it down, hand it in, take them off. That rhythm may carry me through the interview door.
