Editor interview: discourse linkers (B2)

Last week I interviewed Clara Mendez, a features editor at a national magazine, about how writers use advanced discourse linkers to guide readers through long articles. We met in a quiet cafe near her office; however, her examples came from newsroom desks and late-night revisions.

Clara began with a simple claim. Readers tolerate complexity if sentences signal direction. Moreover, she said, linkers act like signposts at paragraph turns. Likewise, weak signposts make fact-heavy drafts feel chaotic even when the research is solid.
