Sophia lifted her fingers from the ivory keys and let the reverberation die away into the empty auditorium , listening to the dust settle in the silence . It was past nine in the evening , twelve hours before the festival premiere , and neither pianist was willing to leave the rehearsal hall until the central fugue sounded coherent . " The tempo drags in the third measure , " Julian said , swiveling on his bench to face her across the twin grand pianos . " You are pulling back the phrasing when the rhythm ought to surge forward . " " I am giving the bass line room to breathe , " Sophia countered , smoothing down the corner of her dog - eared score . " If I accelerate through the polyphonic entry , the audience loses the inner counterpoint . You might prefer mechanical rigidity , but I certainly do not . " " I don't advocate rigidity , " Julian said with a tired smile . " Neither do I wish to bore the conductor . If we distort the pulse here , the cellos will fail to catch their cue . " " They won't , " she replied , pressing a single pedal to test the acoustics . " Maestro Vogel told us this afternoon to treat the passage with lyrical freedom , or at least he hinted that we should . " Julian shook his head , tapping his index finger against the polished lid . Sophia played the opening statement with delicate expressive rubato ; Julian , with stark , relentless drive . Whenever she stretched a cadence , he pressed the pulse onward , refusing to yield . " Let us try the transitional modulation again , " Julian suggested . " If you take the upper voice with absolute precision , I will gladly do so with the lower . " Sophia nodded and counted two silent beats before striking the opening chord . The music unfolded in tight , chromatic layers . Where her left hand introduced a gentle hesitation , Julian answered with crisp staccato chords . For sixteen measures the dialogue remained combative , each musician testing the other's resolve . Yet as the crescendo gathered momentum toward the bridge , something shifted in the hall . Instead of resisting her tempo , Julian adapted to its elastic curve . She noticed his phrasing soften around the trills , and she subtly tightened her own tempo to meet him halfway . The final chord struck the back wall of the balcony and lingered , warm and resolved . " Well ? " Sophia asked , glancing across the music stands . " Did that feel sluggish to you ? " " Surprisingly , it did not , " Julian admitted , marking a brief pencil notation above the staff . " The rubato gave the cadence a weight it lacked before . If tomorrow night sounds half as cohesive as that take , we might actually survive the performance . "
