Professor Hale's graduate seminar on discourse analysis attracted students from three departments, all hesitant to challenge a scholar whose publications they cited. She dared not interrupt when the opening lecture fronted controversial claims about media bias, nor did anyone else until the first coffee break.

What the syllabus promised was analysis of cleft structures in political speech, and deliver on that promise Professor Hale did with examples projected beside live transcripts. It was emphasis that the examples illustrated, not ornament, and illustrate it repeated inversion did when speakers marked turning points.

One student would have asked about corpus size had the speaker paused for questions, but pause he did not until fifty minutes had elapsed. They needn't have scheduled such a dense reading list for week one, yet schedule it the coordinator did believing immersion accelerates competence.

Ought students to challenge senior figures more directly? The professor posed the question using a cleft: it is intellectual courage that the field requires, not polite silence. Require it the discipline does, she added, especially when modal verbs soften disagreement into vague agreement.

What Elena noted in her journal was how dare not appeared in autobiographical accounts of whistleblowers. Appear it did alongside ought to have, forming a modal landscape of regret and restraint.

Not only did the second session examine ellipsis in spoken panel data; it also compared substitution patterns in edited versus spontaneous transcripts.

So did the visiting lecturer demonstrate fronting in British parliamentary archives, and so did students attempt imitation in their own short presentations.

Little did the department expect enrollment to double the following term after word spread about the seminar's practical focus on advanced structures.

He dare not contradict the professor publicly, nor dare his classmates, though many disagreed privately afterward.

So intense was the debate that even experienced mediators struggled to restore conversational rhythm.

She would have intervened earlier had the speaker invited questions, but invite them he did not until the final minute.

What Elena did was summarise both positions, and summarise them she did without favouring either faction.

They needn't have extended the session, yet extend it they did because neither side would concede the definitional point.

Not only did the first panelist front her thesis in the opening sentence; she reinforced it with inverted emphasis after each break.

Ought the moderator to have cut the digression? Perhaps, but cut it she did not for fear of appearing discourteous.

What the audience wanted was clarity, and clarity came only when a cleft sentence isolated the disputed claim.

He might have done so himself, and several colleagues might too if the procedure allowed shared authorship.

Little did the organisers expect that substitution of pronouns would cause confusion in the simultaneous translation feed.
