Research diary, 14 March. The reading room smells of dust and patience. What the archive whispered was not what the catalogue promised, and what the catalogue promised was orderly correspondence between a colonial administrator and his siblings in Edinburgh.
It was Edinburgh that the index emphasised. It was Edinburgh that my grant proposal highlighted to justify travel costs. This emphasis I now question, having spent mornings with boxes the finding aid misdated by a decade.
What misdating obscures is chronology of violence recorded obliquely. What oblique recording demands is reading for silences, not only declarations. Rarely have I encountered letters so cheerful beside margins annotated in another hand.
Never before had I fronted research questions so bluntly in a diary entry: This violence we must name; that cheerfulness we must contextualise, I wrote, aware future me would cringe yet grateful present me did not soften.
What softening achieves is publishable comfort. What comfort excludes is subjects treated as footnotes in their own landscapes. It was landscapes that pseudo-clefts helped restore: What the letters erase is local agency; what marginalia preserves is payment disputes revealing dependency.
What dependency meant on the ground differed from metropolitan summaries. What summaries enabled was policy continuation without scrutiny. The thing that haunts reading rooms is complicity of neutral description.
It was description I challenged in supervisor meetings. It was meetings that pushed me toward methodology chapters I resisted writing. All I wanted from this trip was encounter with texture, not premature theorisation.
What theorisation without texture produces is elegant emptiness. What texture includes is weather, illness, mistranslation between clerks. It was mistranslation that one folder accidentally preserved through duplicate filing.
What duplicate filing signalled was institutional chaos useful to historians. What chaos reveals is decisions made in haste leaving paper trails contradicting official narratives. Seldom does chaos feel so ethically necessary.
What necessity feels like is responsibility to quote carefully. What careful quotation requires is permissions frameworks lagging behind community expectations. This lag we must acknowledge when publishing, my ethics mentor emailed.
What publishing implies is extraction unless reciprocity is designed early. What early design looks like is consultation with descendant communities before claims harden into titles. It was titles I revised after a difficult video call.
What the call taught was humility fronted as syntax: What we know is partial; what we owe is listening. That listening we cannot simulate with a single workshop checkbox.
It was checkboxes that grant agencies love. It was love of metrics that nearly flattened my project into countable outputs. What countable outputs miss is interpretive labour visible only in drafts abandoned honestly.
What honest abandonment looks like is pages deleted when evidence insufficient. What insufficient evidence prevents is harm dressed as discovery. It was discovery language I stripped from the conference abstract last week.
What remains is slower argument anchored in fronted contrasts: It was not malice alone that shaped administration; it was routine punctuated by exceptions administrators recorded as anecdotes.
What anecdotes accumulate into is pattern if read against land registers.
