The main rule
Ask what the sentence has to do. Describe or change someone (ser or estar with a new meaning, or the right change verb)? Add a comment (commas and que, quien, el cual; lo cual for a whole fact)? Spotlight one element (ser + quien, el que, cuando, donde, or a fronted object with its pronoun)? Admit a fact or a possibility (aunque + indicative or subjunctive)? Link two arguments (a connector for addition, consequence, cause, contrast, reformulation or order)? The job picks the form, and the commas and agreement follow.
What do I want to say, and which form does it?
| Job | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Describe a quality or a state | ser or estar when the meaning changes | Es listo (clever) / Está listo (ready). |
| Say that someone changed | ponerse (sudden, temporary), volverse (deep change of character), hacerse (effort, profession, belief), quedarse (state left by an event), convertirse en + noun, llegar a ser (long effort) | Se puso nervioso. Se hizo médico. Se quedó ciego. |
| Add a comment about a noun | commas + que, quien, el cual; el cual after a preposition | La empresa, que es pequeña, ...; la empresa para la cual trabajo |
| Comment on a whole fact | lo cual, lo que | Llegó tarde, lo cual me molestó. |
| Put one element in the spotlight | ser + quien, el que, lo que, cuando, donde; focus words | Fueron ellos los que llamaron. Es aquí donde vivo. |
| Start with a known object | fronted object + pronoun | El libro lo compré ayer. A María la vi. |
| Admit a fact or a possibility | aunque + indicative (new fact) or subjunctive (hypothesis, unknown) | Aunque llueve, salimos. / Aunque llueva, saldremos. |
| Link arguments | connector by function, with its commas | Sin embargo, no vino. Como hace frío, no salimos. |
English hides most of these choices. "Become" and "get" cover ponerse, volverse, hacerse, quedarse and convertirse en, so you must name the kind of change first. "Which" does two jobs, "the company which I work for" and "he was late, which annoyed me"; Spanish keeps them apart (la cual for a noun, lo cual for the whole clause) and never lets a bare que sum up a clause. English moves a word to the front freely and needs nothing extra ("That book I bought yesterday"); Spanish repeats a known fronted object with a pronoun. And "although" always takes the indicative in English, whereas Spanish uses the subjunctive when the fact is a possibility: Aunque llueva is "even if it rains". English also writes "however" and "therefore" with or without commas; Spanish sets sin embargo, por lo tanto and es decir off with them.

Ser and estar, or a change verb
With a few adjectives ser gives the quality and estar the state: ser listo (clever) and estar listo (ready), ser rico (wealthy) and estar rico (tasty), ser malo (bad) and estar malo (ill), ser aburrido (boring) and estar aburrido (bored), ser verde (green) and estar verde (unripe), ser despierto (sharp) and estar despierto (awake). When the person changes, say what kind of change it was: sudden and temporary is ponerse (se puso rojo), deep and involuntary is volverse (se volvió desconfiado), chosen or worked for is hacerse (se hizo vegetariano), the result of an event is quedarse (se quedó sin trabajo). With a noun use convertirse en, and llegar a ser after a long effort.
El cual or lo cual
Commas change the meaning: Los alumnos, que estudiaron, aprobaron (all passed, and all studied) against Los alumnos que estudiaron aprobaron (only those who studied passed). After a comma que and el cual are both fine for a person or a thing, and quien for a person. After a preposition el cual must agree with its noun (la empresa para la cual trabajo, los motivos por los cuales). For a comment on a whole clause use lo cual or lo que, never el cual or que alone: Llegó tarde, lo cual me molestó.
A cleft or a fronted object
Both put a piece of information first, but they work differently. A cleft names the focus after ser: Es Ana quien lo sabe, Lo que necesito es tiempo, Fue en 2010 cuando nos conocimos, Es aquí donde vivo. Quien, el que and la que are interchangeable here, and ser agrees with the focus (Fueron ellos los que llamaron). A fronted object that is already known is repeated by a pronoun: El libro lo compré ayer, A María la vi en el cine. Fronting is always optional; the pronoun is what you cannot drop. Words such as precisamente, incluso, hasta, solo and ni siquiera also point at the element they stand before.
Aunque, then the connectors
After aunque, a pesar de que and aun cuando the question is what the speaker knows. A fact presented as new and true takes the indicative (Aunque llueve, vamos a salir); a hypothesis or something unknown takes the subjunctive (Aunque llueva mañana, iremos), and an unlikely case the imperfect subjunctive (Aunque tuviera dinero, no lo compraría). Tanto si ... como si takes the indicative. A pesar de takes a noun or an infinitive. Between sentences sin embargo, aun así and de todos modos contrast. For arguments choose by function, not by synonym: además adds, por lo tanto and así que conclude, ya que and puesto que give a reason, sin embargo and en cambio oppose, es decir and o sea restate, en primer lugar and por último order. Como with the meaning "because" only opens the sentence.
A model text, analysed
Mi hermana, que es muy lista, se hizo ingeniera hace diez años. La empresa para la cual trabaja está en Lima, y el puesto lo consiguió por mérito. Fue allí donde se volvió una persona más segura. Aunque gana bien, a veces se queda agotada; sin embargo, no piensa cambiar de empresa. Aunque le ofrezcan más dinero, dice que no se irá, lo cual me sorprende. Como se siente a gusto con su equipo, prefiere quedarse; por lo tanto, no tiene prisa. Here aunque gana states a fact as news, aunque le ofrezcan a possibility.
A check before you write
Name the job first: describe, change, comment, spotlight, concede or link. Then check the three things that are easy to lose: the commas, the agreement (la cual, Fueron ellos) and the pronoun after a fronted object. If two forms do the same job (que or quien after a comma, quien or el que in a cleft, por lo tanto or por consiguiente), either is right.
