The main rule
Ser + participle names an event done to the subject, and the participle agrees with it: La casa fue construida, Las casas fueron construidas. Estar + participle names the state that results: La casa está cerrada. A named agent takes por and goes with ser or the active verb, never with passive se. In speech, se or the active third person plural is the usual choice.
The ser passive across tenses
The object of the active sentence becomes the subject, ser keeps the tense of the active verb, and the old subject becomes por + agent. Ser carries the tense; the participle changes only for gender and number.
| Tense | Active | One subject | Several subjects |
|---|---|---|---|
| presente | construyen | es construido | son construidos |
| imperfecto | construían | era construido | eran construidos |
| indefinido | construyeron | fue construido | fueron construidos |
| perfecto | han construido | ha sido construido | han sido construidos |
| pluscuamperfecto | habían construido | había sido construido | habían sido construidos |
| futuro | construirán | será construido | serán construidos |
With a feminine subject the participle ends in -a, -as: La catedral fue construida, Las catedrales han sido construidas. In compound tenses sido never agrees; only the final participle does.
| Infinitive | Participle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| escribir | escrito | Las cartas fueron escritas a mano. |
| abrir | abierto | La puerta fue abierta a las diez. |
| descubrir | descubierto | Las ruinas fueron descubiertas en 1911. |
| hacer | hecho | Los cambios fueron hechos por el equipo técnico. |
| devolver | devuelto | Los libros fueron devueltos ayer. |
| resolver | resuelto | El caso fue resuelto en una semana. |
Ser for the event, estar for the result
The same participle can show the action or the state it leaves behind. Ask whether the sentence places an event in time (a date, ayer, a las diez, someone doing it) or describes how things are now (ahora, todavía, ya, desde hace).
| Ser: the event | Estar: the state |
|---|---|
| El museo fue cerrado en 2015 por el ayuntamiento. | Hoy el museo está cerrado. |
| La calle fue cortada a las ocho por la policía. | La calle todavía está cortada. |
| La carta fue escrita ayer por la tarde. | La carta ya está escrita. |
| Las mesas fueron reservadas por teléfono. | Las mesas están reservadas desde hace una semana. |
Do not use por as the test. A lasting state can keep an agent: El jersey está hecho a mano por mi abuela. The test is whether the sentence tells you what happened or how things stand. For the past state, use estaba: Cuando llegué, la tienda ya estaba cerrada.
The agent: por, never with se
The agent of a ser passive is introduced by por: fue escrito por Cervantes, fueron rescatados por los bomberos. Not de and not con. Passive se has no agent in standard Spanish, so Se construyó el puente por los romanos is not standard. If the agent matters, choose the ser passive or the active: Los romanos construyeron el puente.
Se and the active: the everyday choice
Newspapers, history books and formal reports like the ser passive: La ley fue aprobada por el Congreso. In ordinary talk Spanish prefers se with the verb agreeing with the noun (Se vendieron todas las entradas, Se abrirá una nueva línea de metro) or the third person plural for an unnamed agent (Construyeron un puente nuevo). When the context allows all three, they are all correct. The progressive passive está siendo construido exists, but Se está construyendo is the usual way to say it.
Where English misleads you
English makes a passive from an indirect object: "I was given a book", "I was told", "I was asked". Spanish cannot: the person is an indirect object pronoun and the verb is active. English "it is said" is se dice, and "was born" is the active nací. Reserve the ser passive for the thing done, not the person who received it.
Examples
- La estación fue inaugurada en 1928 por el rey. The station was opened in 1928 by the king.

Which one to pick
Writing a report or an exam answer about an event with an agent: ser + participle + por. Talking about a result: estar. Everything else, especially when nobody is named: se or the third person plural.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between fue cerrado and estaba cerrado?
Fue cerrado says someone closed it, at a point in time. Estaba cerrado says what state it was in. The first answers "what happened", the second "how was it".
How do you say "I was given a book" in Spanish?
Me regalaron un libro or Me dieron un libro. Spanish does not make the person the subject of a passive: the verb is active and me is the indirect object.
Can passive se have an agent with por?
Not in standard Spanish. With a named agent, use the ser passive (El puente fue construido por los romanos) or the active verb (Los romanos construyeron el puente).
How do you say "I was born in Lviv"?
Nací en Lviv. The verb nacer is active, so fui nacido is not used.
Does the participle always agree in the passive?
With ser and estar it agrees in gender and number with the subject: fueron construidas, están cerradas. In ha sido, han sido, sido stays the same and only the final participle agrees: han sido elegidas.
