I am Tomas. I started a new job three months ago, and polite language still matters when I speak with colleagues. Today I might need help with several tasks, so I could prepare my requests carefully.

In the morning I might visit HR about my badge. The receptionist might be busy, so I could wait near the desk. When she looks up, I might say, "Excuse me, may I ask about my access card?"

She might reply that the system could take an hour to update. I might thank her and might ask, "Could you let me know when it is ready?" She might nod and say I may collect it after lunch.

At my desk I might need files from the archive room. My teammate Rina might know the password. I could message her: "Rina, might I borrow the folder for the Miller project?"

Rina might answer that she could bring it in ten minutes. I might reply, "That would help a lot. May I also ask whether you might have the latest budget sheet?" She might attach it to an email.

Before the team meeting I might prepare slides. The projector might not connect, and IT support could arrive late. I might ask the office manager, "Could someone check the cable in Room B?"

The manager might say a technician might come at noon. I might suggest we could start the meeting without slides. My manager might agree and might ask whether anyone could take notes by hand.

During lunch I might sit with new colleagues. I might want to join their conversation politely. I could say, "May I sit here? I might have a question about the training schedule."

They might welcome me warmly. One colleague might explain that sessions could move online next month. I might ask, "Might we choose afternoon slots?" She might say HR could confirm options soon.

After lunch I might photocopy contracts. The machine might jam, and a warning light could flash red. I might knock on the admin door and ask, "Could you help me with the copier? It might be out of toner."

The admin might fix the tray and might show me how to clear paper. I might say, "Thank you. May I ask where we store spare cartridges?" She might point to a cupboard near the kitchen.

Near the end of the day my manager might request a summary. I might need an extra hour. I could say, "Could I send the report tomorrow morning? I might finish the tables tonight, but I could review them more carefully with fresh eyes."

He might answer that tomorrow could work if I might cc the finance team. I might promise to do so and might leave the office feeling relieved.

Polite modals might seem small, yet they could shape how colleagues respond. When I might ask with respect, people may help more willingly, and the workplace might feel friendlier.
