Monday
I started searching for a flat in Bristol last week, and the process already feels exhausting. An agent told me to fill an application in online and fill it in tonight, so I sat at the kitchen table after dinner. My friend Zoe picked me up from the train station and picked me up in her small car. We looked three addresses up on the map and looked them up while traffic crawled. At the second viewing I took photos of a cracked window frame and took them out of my gallery later to compare flats.
Thursday
A letting office asked me to hand copies of my passport in before five and hand them in at the front desk. I printed the pages, then I wiped a smudge off the scanner glass and wiped it off at the shop. The clerk set a folder up with my name on it and set it up on a shelf behind her.
Friday
I hung up after a long call with my parents and hung the phone up on the charger. They told me not to rush. I threw old listings away that mentioned "cozy" rooms with no windows and threw them away from my saved folder.
Saturday
Rain fell all morning. I put my waterproof jacket on and put it on, then I picked the keys up for a second viewing and picked them up from the agent. Inside the flat I switched the heating on to test the radiators and switched it on for ten minutes. Warmth spread slowly, which felt promising.
Sunday
I still have no contract, yet I understand the routine better. Each viewing brings the same verbs: fill it in, switch them on, hand them in, take them out. When the object is a pronoun, it must sit in the middle: pick me up, not pick up me. That rule finally feels natural in my diary sentences.
