The main rule
Take the infinitive and add -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían: hablar > hablaría. The accent on the í is in every form. Ten verbs use the same irregular stem as the futuro: tener > tendría, poder > podría. Use it to be polite, to wish, to advise and to suggest.
Forms: regular verbs
| Person | hablar | comer | vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| tú | hablarías | comerías | vivirías |
| él, ella, usted | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| nosotros | hablaríamos | comeríamos | viviríamos |
| vosotros (Spain) | hablaríais | comeríais | viviríais |
| ellos, ellas, ustedes | hablarían | comerían | vivirían |
The endings are the same for all three verb types, and they are the endings of the imperfecto of -er and -ir verbs, added to the whole infinitive. Yo and él, ella, usted share one form: hablaría. Unlike the futuro (hablaremos), the nosotros form also has the accent: hablaríamos. Leave it out and the form is wrong: hablaria does not exist.
Forms: irregular stems
| Infinitive | Stem | Yo form |
|---|---|---|
| tener | tendr- | tendría |
| salir | saldr- | saldría |
| venir | vendr- | vendría |
| poner | pondr- | pondría |
| poder | podr- | podría |
| querer | querr- | querría |
| saber | sabr- | sabría |
| haber | habr- | habría |
| hacer | har- | haría |
| decir | dir- | diría |
The endings are the regular ones: tendrías, saldríamos, dirían. The stem is the shortened infinitive, so the forms are never tenería, podería or hacería. Compare haré and haría: the stem is the same, only the ending changes.
What is different from English
English "would" has two jobs. Only one of them is the conditional. "I would like to travel" is Me gustaría viajar. But "When I was a child I would go to the beach every summer" is a habit in the past, and Spanish uses the imperfecto: De niño iba a la playa cada verano. "Could" is podría, "should" is debería, and "If I were you, I would..." is Yo que tú or Yo en tu lugar plus the conditional: Yo que tú, hablaría con ella. Sentences with "if" and a full condition ("If I had time, I would...") come at a later level.
A request with "will you" is not the futuro in Spanish. "Will you help me?" is ¿Me ayudas? or, more politely, ¿Podrías ayudarme?
Polite requests
¿Podrías + infinitive? asks a friend, ¿Podría + infinitive? asks a stranger or a superior. ¿Te importaría + infinitive? and ¿Le importaría + infinitive? mean "Would you mind...?", and the infinitive follows without a preposition: ¿Le importaría esperar un momento?
Wishes
Me gustaría and me encantaría + infinitive say what you would like to do: Me gustaría viajar a Chile. Like all gustar verbs, they agree with the thing that pleases, not with the person: Nos gustaría viajar (one thing, the travelling), Me gustarían unos zapatos nuevos (the shoes are plural). The person is only the pronoun: me, te, le, nos, os, les.
Advice and suggestions
Deberías + infinitive says "you should": Deberías descansar, never deberías que. Yo que tú and Yo en tu lugar are followed by the conditional of the same person, yo: Yo en tu lugar, tendría cuidado. Podríamos + infinitive makes a suggestion: Podríamos cenar fuera.
Cautious opinions
The conditional softens what you say. Yo diría que es mejor esperar and Sería mejor salir temprano sound less blunt than Es mejor salir temprano. After sería mejor and me gustaría use an infinitive or a noun.
Other options and the futuro
¿Puedes ayudarme?, Debes descansar and the polite imperfecto Quería un café are also correct. They just sound more direct, or are an alternative way to be polite. The conditional and the futuro differ in meaning: Te ayudaré is a promise, while Te ayudaría, pero hoy no tengo tiempo says the help will not happen.
Examples
- ¿Podrías ayudarme con la maleta? Could you help me with the suitcase?
- ¿Le importaría cerrar la ventana? Would you mind closing the window?
- Me gustaría viajar a Chile. I would like to travel to Chile.
- Nos encantaría conocer a tu familia. We would love to meet your family.
- Deberías descansar un poco. You should rest a little.
- Yo que tú, iría al médico. If I were you, I would go to the doctor.
- Podríamos ir al cine esta noche. We could go to the cinema tonight.
- Yo diría que es mejor esperar. I would say it is better to wait.
- Sería mejor salir temprano. It would be better to leave early.
- Te ayudaría, pero hoy no tengo tiempo. I would help you, but I have no time today.
Think of one word
Say the whole form as one word, with the stress on the í: ha-bla-RÍ-a. Spanish never puts a separate word before the verb for "would".

Frequently asked questions
How do you form the conditional in Spanish?
Add -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían to the infinitive: hablaría, comerías, vivirían. Ten verbs have an irregular stem, the same as in the futuro: tendría, podría, haría, diría.
Is the Spanish conditional the same as English "would"?
Only partly. For polite requests, wishes and advice, yes: Me gustaría, Yo que tú. For a habit in the past, Spanish uses the imperfecto: Iba a la playa cada verano.
How do I say "I would like" in Spanish?
Me gustaría + infinitive (Me gustaría viajar) or + noun (Me gustaría un café). With a plural thing the verb is plural: Me gustarían unos zapatos nuevos.

Both are correct. ¿Puedes ayudarme? is direct and natural among friends, and ¿Podrías ayudarme? is softer. Podría is the safer choice with a stranger.

Te ayudaré is a promise: I will help. Te ayudaría, pero hoy no tengo tiempo says I would help, but it will not happen.
How do I say "If I were you" in Spanish?
Use Yo que tú or Yo en tu lugar and the conditional: Yo que tú, hablaría con ella. Full sentences with "if" come at a later level.
