Головне правило
Короткий прикметник: -er і the -est (tall - taller - the tallest). Довгий прикметник: more і the most (expensive - more expensive - the most expensive). Двох порівнюємо через than, а одного з групи виділяємо через the і in або of.

Прикметники з трьох і більше складів беруть more / the most. Деякі двоскладові мають обидві форми: clever - cleverer або more clever, quiet, simple. Поки що вчіть їх як окремі слова. Є й протилежні less (менш) та the least (найменш), але зараз вони нам не потрібні.

В українській ми часто будуємо вищий ступінь двома способами: «вищий» або «більш цікавий». В англійській так само два способи, але вибір залежить від довжини слова, а не від звички. Не змішуйте їх, як у «більш вищий»: *more taller, *more bigger. Немає й «найбільш найкращий»: best уже містить значення «найбільш», тому *the most best неправильно. Ще одна різниця: в українській немає артиклів, а в англійській найвищий ступінь майже завжди має the. Українське «найвищий у класі» - це the tallest in the class. Українською після вищого ступеня кажемо «ніж» або «за», а англійською завжди лише than.

Than: порівнюємо двох
Вищий ступінь майже завжди йде разом із than: He is taller than his father. Після than можна сказати me, him, her: She is older than me. Слова then (потім) і than звучать схоже, але це різні слова.
The + найвищий ступінь: in і of
Найвищий ступінь називає одного з групи. Перед ним ставимо the. Група - це місце або спільнота в однині: in the world, in our class, in my family, in Spain. Якщо після слова стоїть число, все або множина, ставимо of: of all, of the three, of my friends. З присвійним словом the не потрібне: my best friend, our biggest problem, а не *my the best friend.
As ... as: однаково
Щоб сказати «такий самий», беремо as + прикметник + as: Kate is as tall as her mother. Прикметник тут не змінюється. Заперечення - not as ... as: The bus is not as fast as the train. Форма not so ... as теж правильна.
Правопис -er / -est
Подвоюємо приголосну, лише коли слово закінчується на одну голосну і одну приголосну: big - bigger. Після двох голосних або w не подвоюємо: cheap - cheaper, slow - slower. Для -y дивіться на букву перед ним: easy - easier, але grey - greyer.

Коли додавати -er, а коли more?
Короткі прикметники (один склад і багато на -y) беруть -er: taller, easier. Довгі беруть more: more expensive, more interesting.
Чим відрізняється better від best?
Better порівнює двох і йде з than: This is better than that. The best вибирає одного з групи: the best in the class.
Як правильно: further чи farther?
Обидві форми правильні: further і farther, the furthest і the farthest.
Коли в найвищому ступені in, а коли of?
In стоїть перед місцем або групою в однині: in the world, in my family. Of стоїть перед числом, all або множиною: of all, of the three.
Чи можна сказати not so ... as?
Так. The bus is not so fast as the train і The bus is not as fast as the train - обидва варіанти правильні.
Чи потрібне the в my best friend?
Ні. Присвійне слово (my, our, her) замінює the: my best friend, our biggest problem.
