Головне правило
say + слова, tell + людина + слова: He said he was tired. He told me he was tired. Якщо дієслово переказу в минулому (said, told), час у переказі зсувається на крок назад: am / is / are стає was / were, will стає would, can стає could. Слово that можна пропустити.
Say чи tell
Після tell обов’язково йде людина, якій сказали: told me, told Anna, told us. Після say людини немає: He said that he was late. Якщо людину все ж треба назвати, між ними стоїть to: He said to me that he was late. Обидва варіанти, told me і said to me, правильні й означають одне й те саме.
Підказка
Якщо після дієслова можна одразу поставити me, him чи Anna, це told. Якщо людини немає, це said. Українське «розповів» і «сказав мені» в таких реченнях зазвичай дають told.

В українській мові переказ зберігає час оригіналу: «Він сказав, що втомлений», «Вона сказала, що прийде», «Він сказав, що може». В англійській після said і told час зазвичай зсувається. Тому: He said he was tired (не *is), She said she would come (не *will), He said he could (не *can). Це найпоширеніша помилка українців у непрямій мові. Є й друга пастка: «що» тут завжди that (або нічого), ніколи не what: не *She said what she was hungry.

- Tom told me he lived near the station. Том розповів мені, що живе біля вокзалу.
- Olena told her parents that she had passed the exam. Олена повідомила батькам, що склала іспит.
- Pablo said he lost his phone at the party. Пабло сказав, що загубив телефон на вечірці.
- Mr Brown said to us that he would help. Містер Браун сказав нам, що допоможе.
- Kate said she couldn't come on Friday. Кейт сказала, що не зможе прийти в п’ятницю.
- Ivan told me he was going to buy a bike. Іван розповів мені, що збирається купити велосипед.
- On Friday Lucia told me she would visit me the next day. У п’ятницю Лусія сказала мені, що наступного дня відвідає мене.
Past Simple у прямій мові
Слова I lost my keys можна переказати двома способами: She said she lost her keys або She said she had lost her keys. Обидва правильні, тож не шукайте «єдиного» варіанта. Past Perfect лише чіткіше показує, що це сталося раніше, ніж людина про це сказала.
Коли час не змінюється
Якщо дієслово переказу в теперішньому, зсуву немає: Kate says she is at the station. Tom says he can't come. Слова, які досі правдиві, можна лишити в теперішньому: He said the shop opens at nine. Це не жорсткий закон, а лише можливість: зсунутий варіант (the shop opened at nine) теж правильний. А якщо ситуація вже минула, зсув потрібен: Last year Anna said she lived in Lviv, but now she lives in Kyiv.
Займенники
Займенники змінюються за тим, хто тепер говорить: I -> he / she, my -> his / her, we -> they, our -> their, me -> him / her, а you стає I / me, якщо слова адресовано вам. Anna said to me, «You are late» -> Anna told me I was late. Це легко, бо українська робить так само.

Ці слова міняються лише тоді, коли переказ звучить пізніше або в іншому місці: Kate said on Monday, «I will call you tomorrow». Якщо ви переказуєте в той самий день, tomorrow лишається. А якщо переказуєте вже в середу, кажуть: Kate said she would call me the next day. Питання та накази (reported questions, reported commands) є окремими темами.

Чим say відрізняється від tell?
Після tell завжди стоїть людина: He told me, She told Anna. Після say її немає, або вона з’являється з to: He said it, He said to me.
Чи обов’язково вживати that?
Ні. She said (that) she was hungry: обидва варіанти правильні. Але замість that не можна ставити what.
Як узгоджуються часи в непрямій мові?
Якщо said чи told стоять у минулому, час переказу зсувається на крок назад: Present Simple -> Past Simple, Present Perfect -> Past Perfect, will -> would, can -> could, going to -> was / were going to. Past Simple лишається Past Simple або стає Past Perfect.
Коли час не змінюється?
Коли дієслово переказу в теперішньому (She says she is at the station) і часто коли сказане досі правдиве (He said the shop opens at nine). Це можливість, а не закон.
Як змінюються tomorrow, yesterday і here?
Tomorrow -> the next day, yesterday -> the day before, here -> there. Але тільки якщо ви переказуєте пізніше чи в іншому місці.
