La forma passiva in inglese: is / are, was / were + participio

B1 Modali e periodo ipotetico ·

La regola principale

Passive = be + past participle. Il soggetto è ciò che subisce l’azione: The letter was sent. Presente: am / is / are + participio; passato: was / were + participio. Chi ha compiuto l’azione si aggiunge con by, solo se serve: Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.

Le forme

is / are e was / were concordano con il soggetto; il participio non cambia mai
Tempo e formaSingolarePlurale
presente, affermativaThe room is cleaned every day.The rooms are cleaned every day.
presente, negativaThe room isn't cleaned on Sundays. The rooms aren't cleaned on Sundays.
presente, domandaIs the room cleaned every day?Are the rooms cleaned every day?
passato, affermativaThe bridge was built in 1890.The bridges were built in 1890.

passato, domandaWas the bridge built in 1890?Were the bridges built in 1890?

Con un sostantivo singolare o non numerabile (money, bread, information) vanno is / was; con un plurale, are / were: Bread is sold here, The tickets are sold here.

The houses were built, mai *builts. E «da» davanti all’agente è by, non *from: non *written from Cervantes.

  • I am paid every month. Mi pagano ogni mese.
  • The bridge was built in 1890. Il ponte è stato costruito nel 1890.
  • My bike was stolen yesterday. Ieri mi hanno rubato la bici.
  • The letters were sent last week.

  • I was born in 2001.

Esempio: They built the school in 1975 → The school was built in 1975. Al presente: They grow rice in Asia → Rice is grown in Asia.

L’autore è sconosciuto: My phone was stolen. Oppure è ovvio: Bread is sold here. Oppure non importa: The rooms are cleaned every day. È tipico di notizie, storia, produzione e regolamenti: The bridge was built in 1890. Coffee is grown in Brazil.

By e l’agente

Si mette by quando l’agente è un’informazione nuova o importante: Hamlet was written by Shakespeare. The cake was made by my aunt. Non aggiungere *by someone* o *by people*: non è sbagliato, ma suona goffo; meglio omettere l’agente: My phone was stolen.

Negazioni, domande e risposte brevi

Negazione: isn't / aren't (con I: am not), wasn't / weren't + participio: The windows weren't cleaned. Nella domanda be va per primo: Was your bike found? Con una parola interrogativa: Where was it made? When were these photos taken? Per chiedere l’agente: Who was it written by? (by resta in fondo). Anche «Chi l’ha scritto?» in forma attiva è corretto: Who wrote it? Le risposte brevi ripetono be: Yes, it was. / No, they weren't. / Yes, it is. Non servono do / did.

Be born

«Nascere» in inglese è sempre un passivo: I was born in 2001. Where were you born? Per il presente: Many babies are born in this hospital every year. Sono sbagliati *I born*, *I am born in 2001* e *I was borned*.

I verbi senza oggetto (happen, arrive, die, come, stay) non hanno il passivo: non *It was happened e non *He was died, ma It happened e He died.

Errori tipici

  • Speaks English here. English is spoken here. in inglese non c’è il «si»: servono un soggetto e be.
  • Don Quixote was written from Cervantes. Don Quixote was written by Cervantes. l’agente si introduce con by, non con from.
  • The bridge has been built in 1890. The bridge was built in 1890. con una data passata serve il past simple, non il present perfect.
  • The letter was wrote last week. The letter was written last week. il participio di write non è wrote.
  • The car didn't stolen. The car wasn't stolen. la negazione la fa be, non did.
  • When the bridge was built? When was the bridge built? nella domanda be va prima del soggetto.
  • The accident was happened at night. The accident happened at night. happen non ha il passivo.
  • I am born in 1995. I was born in 1995. «sono nato» in inglese è was born.

Domande e risposte

Con be al tempo giusto e il participio passato: is / are / am + participio al presente e was / were + participio al passato. Il soggetto è ciò che subisce l’azione: The letters were sent.

Quando si usa by nel passivo?

Quando l’agente è importante o è un’informazione nuova: Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.

Si usa il passivo con un soggetto: Bread is sold here, Tickets are sold here.

I was born in 2001. La domanda è Where were you born?
