B1 Modali e periodo ipotetico ·

La regola principale

say + parole, tell + persona + parole: He said he was tired. He told me he was tired. Se il verbo introduttivo è al passato, il tempo fa un passo indietro: am / is / are diventa was / were, will diventa would, can diventa could. Il that è facoltativo.

Say o tell

Dopo tell c’è sempre la persona che ascolta: told me, told Anna, told us. Dopo say la persona non c’è: He said that he was late. Se vuoi nominarla, serve to: He said to me that he was late. Told me e said to me sono entrambe corrette e hanno lo stesso significato.

Trucco

Se subito dopo il verbo puoi mettere me, him o Anna, usa told.

Racconto: Tom said (that) he...
Discorso direttoDiscorso indirettoEsempio
Present simplePast simpleI live in Rome. -> Tom said he lived in Rome.
am / is / arewas / wereI am tired. -> Tom said he was tired.
Past simplePast simple o past perfectI lost my keys. -> Tom said he lost / had lost his keys.
Present perfectPast perfectI have finished. -> Tom said he had finished.
will / won'twould / wouldn'tI will call you. -> Tom said he would call me.
can / can'tcould / couldn'tI can't swim. -> Tom said he couldn't swim.
am / is / are going towas / were going toI'm going to buy a car. -> Tom said he was going to buy a car.

He said he was tired, mai *He said to be tired. Inoltre in italiano il «che» è obbligatorio, mentre in inglese il that si può togliere: She said she was hungry. Non confonderlo però con what: non si dice *She said what she was hungry.

Esempi

  • Giulia said she was hungry, so we ordered pizza.
  • Marco told me he lived near the station.
  • Chiara told her parents that she had passed the exam.
  • Luca said he lost his phone at the party.
  • Mr Brown said to us that he would help.
  • Sara said she couldn't come on Friday.
  • Paolo told me he was going to buy a bike.
  • On Friday Elena told me she would visit me the next day.

Le parole I lost my keys si riferiscono in due modi: She said she lost her keys oppure She said she had lost her keys.

Tom says he can't come. Ciò che è ancora vero può restare al presente: He said the shop opens at nine. È una possibilità, non una legge: anche the shop opened at nine è corretto. Se la situazione è finita, il cambio serve: Last year Anna said she lived in Lima, but now she lives in Quito.

I pronomi

I pronomi cambiano in base a chi parla adesso: I -> he / she, my -> his / her, we -> they, our -> their, me -> him / her, e you diventa I / me se le parole erano rivolte a te. Anna said to me, «You are late» -> Anna told me I was late. Come in italiano, questo risulta naturale.

Corrispondono a «il giorno dopo», «il giorno prima», «quel giorno», «allora» e «lì». Cambiano solo quando riferisci le parole più tardi o in un altro luogo: se Kate ha detto lunedì «I will call you tomorrow» e ne parli mercoledì, dici Kate said she would call me the next day.

Errori tipici

  • He said me that he was tired. He told me that he was tired. / He said to me that he was tired. «mi ha detto» è told me; said non vuole la persona come complemento diretto
  • He told that he was tired. He told me that he was tired. / He said that he was tired. tell vuole la persona
  • She told to me that she was late. She told me that she was late. tell non vuole to
  • She said what she was hungry. She said (that) she was hungry. «che» è that, non what
  • She said to be hungry. She said (that) she was hungry. niente di + infinito: serve il verbo coniugato
  • On Monday she said she will come on Tuesday, but she didn't. On Monday she said she would come on Tuesday, but she didn't. will diventa would, come «sarebbe venuta»
  • Years ago Tom said he can't swim. Years ago Tom said he couldn't swim. can diventa could
  • She said she was go to buy a car. She said she was going to buy a car. was / were + going to + verbo

Domande e risposte

Dopo tell c’è sempre una persona: He told me, She told Anna. Dopo say non c’è, oppure compare con to: He said it, He said to me.

Si può omettere that?

Sì. She said (that) she was hungry: entrambe sono corrette. Non puoi però usare what al posto di that.

Come cambiano i tempi nel discorso indiretto?

Se said o told sono al passato, il tempo retrocede: present simple diventa past simple, present perfect diventa past perfect, will diventa would, can diventa could, going to diventa was / were going to. Il past simple resta uguale oppure diventa past perfect.

Quando il tempo non cambia?

Quando il verbo introduttivo è al presente (She says she is at the station) e, spesso, quando ciò che è stato detto è ancora vero (He said the shop opens at nine). È una possibilità, non una regola fissa.

Come cambiano tomorrow, yesterday e here?

Tomorrow diventa the next day, yesterday diventa the day before e here diventa there.

Posso dire He said to be tired come in italiano?

No. In inglese non esiste il «di + infinito» dell’italiano dopo said: usa una frase completa, He said (that) he was tired.
