La regola principale
Se la frase dice o chiede un momento concluso (yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2019, When...?): past simple. Se non c’è un momento, o il periodo arriva fino a oggi (ever, never, so far, since, How long...?): present perfect.
Gli indizi di ogni tempo
| Past simple: tempo concluso | Present perfect: fino a oggi |
|---|---|
| yesterday, last night, last year | ever, never, so far, up to now |
| two days ago, in 2019, in May | since 2019, since Monday |
| on Monday, at six o'clock, when I was a child | for five years (now), How long ...? |
| When / What time / How long ago ...? | This is the first time I have ... |
| Present perfect | Past simple |
|---|---|
| I have lost my phone. | I lost it yesterday. |
| Have you been to Rome? | Did you like it? |
| She has lived here for ten years. | She lived here for ten years, then she moved. |
I have lived here for three years.
Esempi
- I have seen this film three times. Ho visto questo film tre volte.
- I saw it with Tom last Friday. L’ho visto con Tom venerdì scorso.
- Have you ever been to London? - Yes, I have. I went there in 2019. Sei mai stato a Londra? - Sì. Ci sono andato nel 2019.
- We have known each other since 2015. Ci conosciamo dal 2015.
- When did you buy this bag? - Two weeks ago. Quando hai comprato questa borsa? - Due settimane fa.
- How long have you had your car? - For three years now. Da quanto tempo hai la macchina? - Ormai da tre anni.
- My grandfather was a pilot. He flew to many countries. Mio nonno era pilota. Ha viaggiato in aereo in molti paesi.
- This is the first time I have eaten sushi.
La notizia di solito va al present perfect e i dettagli (quando, dove, come) al past simple: There has been a fire in the old market. It started at 3 am. Lo stesso in una conversazione: Have you seen my keys? - Yes, you left them on the table.
When? o How long?
La domanda sul momento va sempre al past simple: When did you meet? What time did it start? La domanda sulla durata fino a oggi va al present perfect: How long have you known her? - Since 2015. Corrisponde a «da quanto tempo la conosci?». Ma How long può chiedere anche un periodo chiuso: How long did you live in Paris? - For two years, then I left.
He has lived in Lviv for ten years vuol dire che ci abita ancora: «abita lì da dieci anni». He lived in Lviv for ten years, then he moved to Kyiv: il periodo è finito, «ha abitato lì per dieci anni». Indizi: now, still e «ancora adesso» chiedono il present perfect; then e una fine chiara chiedono il past simple. Dopo since con un fatto passato, il verbo di since va al past simple e la principale al present perfect: We have been friends since we met at school.
Parole che ammettono i due tempi
Con today, this morning, this week, this year e recently tutto dipende dal fatto che il periodo sia ancora aperto. La mattina: I have had two coffees this morning. I had two coffees this morning. Nell’inglese britannico è normale il present perfect: I have just eaten. Nell’inglese americano è frequente il past simple: I just ate, Did you eat yet? Sono corretti entrambi, non considerarli errori.
Consiglio
Cerca prima un momento passato detto nella frase: yesterday, ago, last, in 2019, when. Se c’è, è past simple. Se invece trovi since, so far, ever con risposta «Yes, I have», o «How long...?», è present perfect. La risposta breve ripete l’ausiliare della domanda: Have you...? - Yes, I have. Did you...? - Yes, I did.
Errori tipici
I have seen her two hours ago.I saw her two hours ago. «due ore fa» = two hours ago: past simpleI have bought it last week.I bought it last week. last week è un momento conclusoHave you seen the match yesterday?Did you see the match yesterday? yesterday vuole il past simpleWhen have you arrived? When did you arrive? con When? sempre past simpleI don't see him since May.I haven't seen him since May. «non lo vedo da maggio»: since + present perfectI live here since three years.I have lived here for three years. «vivo qui da tre anni»: present perfect + for, mai sinceI am studying English for two years.I have been studying English for two years. il presente italiano con «da» diventa un tempo perfectHave you saw this film?Have you seen this film? dopo have va il participio: seen
Domande e risposte
No. Yesterday, last week, ago o in 2019 indicano un tempo concluso e vogliono il past simple: I saw him yesterday, non *I have seen him yesterday*.
Nell’inglese americano è normale: Did you ever try sushi? In quello britannico si dice soprattutto Have you ever tried sushi?
I have lived here for three years. Con un momento preciso si usa since: I have lived here since 2022.
Two hours ago, sempre con il past simple: I called her two hours ago.
Se è finito, past simple: I saw her this morning.
