Phrasal verbs separabili: turn it on, look after it

In un phrasal verb separabile il complemento oggetto espresso da un nome sta prima o dopo la particella: **turn on the light** e **turn the light on**. Il pronome sta solo in mezzo: **turn it on**, mai «turn on it».

B1 Frasi complesse ·

La regola principale

Con un nome: turn on the light o turn the light on, entrambe corrette. Con un pronome personale complemento (me, you, him, her, it, us, them): solo tra il verbo e la particella, turn it on, pick them up. I verbi con preposizione (look after, look for) non si separano mai: il complemento va dopo tutto il verbo, look after it.

Verbi separabili

turn onturn on the radio / turn the radio onturn it on
turn offturn off the oven / turn the oven offturn it off
put onput on your boots / put your boots onput them on
take offtake off your hat / take your hat offtake it off
pick uppick up the twins / pick the twins uppick them up
fill infill in the form / fill the form infill it in
wake upwake up the baby / wake the baby upwake her up

Verbi inseparabili

Il complemento (nome o pronome) va sempre dopo tutto il verbo
VerboCon un nomeCon un pronome
look afterlook after my auntlook after her
look forlook for the keyslook for them
get on withget on with my bossget on with him
run out ofrun out of milkrun out of it
look forward tolook forward to the triplook forward to it

Inoltre turn off ti suona come un verbo solo, come «spegnere», e per questo dici turn off it, oppure it turn off (come in «lo spengo»). In inglese il pronome si infila in mezzo: turn it off. Dopo aver imparato questo arriva l’errore opposto: separi tutto e dici look it after o look them for, perché anche «occuparsene» e «cercarli» hanno il pronome attaccato. Ma look after e look for non si possono spezzare.

Pronomi e complementi lunghi

I pronomi complemento sono me, you, him, her, it, us, them. Scegli in base a ciò che sostituisci: una giacca è it (try it on), delle scarpe sono them (try them on), una sorella è her (pick her up). Se il complemento è lungo, per esempio un nome con una proposizione relativa, di solito va dopo la particella: Fill in the form that the receptionist gave you. Separarlo, fill the form that the receptionist gave you in, suona goffo.

Verbi senza complemento

Alcuni phrasal verbs non hanno complemento oggetto: get up, grow up, set off, come back. Non c’è niente in mezzo: We set off at six. Il verbo wake up si usa in entrambi i modi: I woke up at six (senza complemento) e The noise woke me up (con complemento, il pronome in mezzo).

Come capire se un verbo si separa

Non esiste una regola sicura, quindi controlla il dizionario: lì trovi turn sth on, ma look after sb. Come orientamento, le particelle on, off, up, down, away, back, in di solito permettono la separazione, mentre after e for di solito no, perché sono preposizioni.

Errori tipici

  • Turn off it, please. Turn it off, please. il pronome va tra il verbo e la particella.
  • I will it pick up at six. I will pick it up at six. il pronome non sta prima del verbo, come in «lo prendo».
  • Give back it to me. Give it back to me. anche con «restituire» vale give it back.
  • Throw away them, please. Throw them away, please. «buttarli via» si dice throw them away.
  • Can I try on it? Can I try it on? «provarlo» vuole il pronome in mezzo.
  • Write down it, please. Write it down, please. down it non esiste.
  • She looks it after every day. She looks after it every day. look after non si separa.
  • I looked them for everywhere. I looked for them everywhere. nemmeno look for si separa.

Domande e risposte

Che cosa sono i phrasal verbs separabili?

Sono phrasal verbs il cui complemento può stare tra il verbo e la particella: turn the light on. Ammettono anche turn on the light, e le due forme sono corrette.

Turn it on o turn on it?

Solo turn it on. Lo stesso vale per pick them up, wake me up, take it off.

Look after it o look it after?

Solo look after it. Il verbo look after non si separa, quindi il complemento, nome o pronome, va dopo: look after the baby, look after her.

Guarda il dizionario: turn sth on è separabile, look after sb no. Le particelle on, off, up, down, away, back, in di solito si separano, after e for di solito no.
