La regla principal
Present continuous: am / is / are + verbo con -ing. He is cooking. They are playing. Sin am, is o are, la frase es incorrecta.
Formas: afirmativa, negativa y pregunta
| Quién | Afirmativa | Negativa | Pregunta y respuesta corta |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | I am reading. / I'm reading. | I am not reading. / I'm not reading. | Am I reading? - Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. |
| you, we, they | You are reading. / You're reading. | You aren't reading. / You're not reading. | Are you reading? - Yes, we are. / No, we aren't. |
| he, she, it | She is reading. / She's reading. | She isn't reading. / She's not reading. | Is she reading? - Yes, she is. / No, she isn't. |
(no *Yes, I'm.) Las preguntas con palabra interrogativa siguen este orden: palabra interrogativa + am / is / are + sujeto + verbo con -ing: What are you reading? Where is Dad going? Why are they laughing?
Look! It is raining. Además, el sujeto no se omite: no «Is raining» ni «Am reading», sino It is raining, I am reading.
Ejemplos
- Look! It is raining. ¡Mira! Está lloviendo.
- She is reading in the garden. Está leyendo en el jardín.
- Listen! The baby is crying. ¡Escucha! El bebé está llorando.
- They are playing football in the park. Están jugando al fútbol en el parque.
- Tom is making tea. Tom está preparando té.
- I am learning to swim this year. Este año estoy aprendiendo a nadar.
- We aren't watching TV now. Ahora no estamos viendo la tele.
- Are you working right now? ¿Estás trabajando ahora mismo?
- What is she cooking? ¿Qué está cocinando?
- Max is running to the bus. Max corre hacia el autobús.
Cómo se escribe el -ing
| Regla | Forma base | Con -ing |
|---|---|---|
| -ie pasa a -y | lie, die, tie | lying, dying, tying |
Estas palabras y avisos señalan una acción en marcha: now, right now, at the moment, Look!, Listen!. Con today y this week se habla de algo que está en marcha en esos días: She is working at home today. We are painting the kitchen this week. I am learning Spanish this year.
Verbos que casi no llevan -ing
Verbos como know, like, want o need suelen quedarse en present simple, incluso cuando hablas de «ahora»: I know the answer. Los veremos en el tema siguiente.
Errores típicos
She cooking dinner. She is cooking dinner. Falta el auxiliar: en inglés siempre hace falta am, is o are.I no am working.I am not working. La negación se pone después de am, is, are, no antes. They is playing. They are playing. Con they, we y you se usa are.Look! It rains.Look! It is raining. Para lo que pasa ahora se usa am / is / are + -ing, no el presente simple. He is runing. He is running. She is writeing. She is writing. What you are doing? What are you doing? El auxiliar va antes del sujeto: are you.Are you working? - Yes, I'm.Yes, I am.
