The main rule
Encantar and interesar are built like gustar: the pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) says who, and the verb agrees with the thing: encanta / interesa for one thing or an infinitive, encantan / interesan for several things. Preferir is different: the person is the subject, so it is prefiero, prefieres, prefiere... and the e becomes ie.
Encantar and interesar: like gustar
| Who | Pronoun | One thing | Several things |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | me | me encanta el jazz | me interesan los idiomas |
| you (tú) | te | te encanta el jazz | te interesan los idiomas |
| he, she, you (usted) | le | le encanta el jazz | le interesan los idiomas |
| we | nos | nos encanta el jazz | nos interesan los idiomas |
| you all (vosotros, Spain) | os | os encanta el jazz | os interesan los idiomas |
| they, you all (ustedes) | les | les encanta el jazz | les interesan los idiomas |
The pattern is the one you know from gustar (A1): the thing you love or are interested in is the subject, an infinitive always takes the singular (Me encanta bailar y cantar), and a + person adds emphasis or says who le or les means: A Laura le interesa la política, A mis padres les encantan los mercados. Negatives and questions work the same way: No nos interesan las noticias deportivas, ¿Te interesa el arte?
Encantar is stronger than gustar: it means "to love" a thing or an activity. Interesar means "to be interested in" and "to interest".
Why English speakers get it wrong
In English "I love", "I'm interested in" and "I prefer" all have "I" as the subject. In Spanish only preferir works that way. With encantar and interesar the thing is the subject and "I" is just me: "jazz delights me", "politics interests me". So *Yo encanto el jazz and *Yo intereso la política are wrong, and so is *Me encanta los mercados, because the verb must agree with los mercados: Me encantan los mercados. And with an infinitive it is always the singular: *Me encantan bailar is wrong.
Examples
- Me encanta el jazz. I love jazz.
- Les encantan las series coreanas. They love Korean series.
- Nos encanta viajar y conocer mercados. We love travelling and visiting markets.
- A Laura le interesa la política. Laura is interested in politics.
- ¿Te interesan los idiomas? Are you interested in languages?
- No nos interesan las noticias deportivas. We're not interested in sports news.
- Prefiero la montaña a la ciudad. I prefer the mountains to the city.
- Mateo prefiere el tren al avión. Mateo prefers the train to the plane.
- A Lucía y a Diego les interesa más la historia que la geografía. Lucía and Diego are more interested in history than in geography.
- Me gusta más el yoga que el gimnasio. I like yoga more than the gym.
Preferir: a normal verb with e > ie
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | prefiero | Prefiero caminar. |
| tú | prefieres | ¿Prefieres té o café? |
| él, ella, usted | prefiere | Ana prefiere el campo. |
| nosotros | preferimos | Preferimos cenar en casa. |
| vosotros (Spain) | preferís | ¿Preferís el cine o el teatro? |
| ellos, ustedes | prefieren | Mis padres prefieren viajar en coche. |
The e of the stem becomes ie in every form except nosotros and vosotros, which keep the e: preferimos, preferís. Learners often change every form or none: *Prefero, *Prefieremos. After preferir you can put a noun or an infinitive, and unlike gustar the article is optional: Prefiero té and Prefiero el té are both fine. To ask: ¿Qué prefieres, la playa o la montaña?
"I prefer" maps straight onto prefiero. Do not copy the gustar pattern: *Me prefiere is wrong, because the person who prefers is the subject: Yo prefiero (or just Prefiero).
Prefer X to Y: prefiero X a Y
The thing you prefer comes right after the verb, and the thing you like less follows with a: Prefiero la montaña a la ciudad. When a meets el they merge into al: Prefiero el tren al avión, not *a el avión.
Comparing what you like: me gusta más X que Y
Put más after the verb and que before the second thing: Me gusta más la sopa que la ensalada. The verb agrees with the first thing, because it is the subject: Me gustan más los libros que las series. The same works with interesar: Me interesa más la historia que la geografía. The order Me gusta la sopa más que la ensalada is also correct. Do not use de with más here: más de is for numbers (más de diez libros).
One question to ask
Before choosing the verb, ask who the subject is. If you can say "the thing pleases or interests me", use encanta / interesa and look at the thing. If you are the one choosing, use prefiero.
